Youth Also Lags in Latin America, Louis Panush States in Travel Report In Latin American countries, on the same scale as in this country and Western European lands, a priThlem of great proportion is the failure to enroll Jewish youth's interest in Jewish affairs, Louis Panush, president of the Zionist Organization of Detroit, states after a tour of the South American continent. Describing the position of Jews in several countries which have a total Jewish population of 850,000—nearly 500.000 in Argen- tina, 150.000 in Brazil. Smaller numbers in other lands—Panush pointed to the extensive activities of the General Zionists, the devoted efforts in behalf of the Jewish Na- tional Fund, the functions of DATA—Central. Body of Jewish Organizations in Argentina. Pan- ush stated in his extensive report: "The Argentinian General Zion- ists plan to set up a $1,000,000 fund, the bulk to be contributed by 20 Jews, and the rest to be sold in shares of $100 each with a guar- anteed income of 4 12 per cent to the investors, profits from this fund to be used to encourage Ar- gentine Jews to settle in Israel, Hey ! Guess What I Do help them find housing and open businesses via financing up to a maximum of $50,000 each, and enable them to be absorbed and acculturated in Israel's life and economy. "The I.atin-American Confeder- ation of General Zionists, whose central office is in Buenos Aires, is attempting to accomplish some of these aims: strengthening the activities of all general Zionist orgagnizations in Latin America; interesting and activating more , Jews, especially the younger gen- I oration, in Herzlian Zionism; im- plementing Zionist ideals. "The problem of the Jewish youth in Latin America, Argen- tina and Brazil included, is a serious one. Although there arc some good educational institutions, many parochial schools in Hebrew and Yiddish ('Tarbut' and 'Bialik' are two excellent Hebrew day schools sponsored by the General Zionists in Buenos Aires), the younger generation is not fully enthusiastic about anything related to Zionism and Judaism. The Zion- ist organization fights all kinds of assimilation on the Jewish scene, iyouth's pre-occupation with ideals and causes which are often an- tagonistic to and threaten Jewish and Zionist life, with the hope that some shall return and serve in the cause of the Jewish people and Israel. "Brazilian Zionists face the same problems as their Argentin- ian brothers, particularly that of age and the lack of interest and involvement on the part of the younger Jews. "During my visit, the Rio or- ganization opened a new General Zionist Center, which they had bought recently, that has an audi- torium for about 150 people and a reception-office room. In addi- tion, a Herzl Library was estali- lished there in the hopes that young Jews—who do not like to belong to parties—will come there to read and learn about Zionism and Jews. "The majority of Jews in Ar- gentina and Brazil live well, better than in any other part of the world, said one. They are mostly middle class, in business and in- dustry; more of the working class and artisans in Buenos Aires, and some poor. Children born there are acculturated. Those who go to Hebrew and Yiddish all-day schools and high schools do have a notian of Jewishness and some interest in Jewish life and culture. "The story is told about the second richest banker in Lima, Peru, a Zionist, who donated an auditorium, valued at $350,000, for a Zionist Jewish Center. But, the question is, who of the 5,000 'Lima Jews will use it? Although the situation is much different in Buenos Aires and Rio, I felt that a the question even there is a valid one and that the survival and future of Zionism. depends not only on the inner resources and vitality of these Jewries but also on what understanding and help American Zionists, the Jewish Agency and Israel will give them and what common meaningful, two- way bridge will be built between the American and Latin American Jewries." A similar concentration of the slightly more common isotope Oxygen 18, was reached some years ago. This was announced by Prof- David Wolf, head of the isotope separation plant, who pointed out that ordinary oxygen is composed mainly of Oxygen 16, with only miniscule quantities of the isotopes Oxygen 18 (0.2 per cent) and Oxy- gen 17 (0.37 per cent). The very high concentration of Oxygen 17 achieved at Re- hovot was the result of years of research and development under the direction of Prof. Israel Dostrovsky, who established the plant. Heavy Oxygen (17 and 18), as well as chemical compounds "labeled" with these isotopes (by the Miles-Yeda Co. in Rehovot) are used in chemical, physical and biological research at the Weizmann Institute and all over the world. Burke Asks U.S. Govt. to Discontinue Trainihg Arab Military Personnel WASHINGTON (JTA) — Rep. J. Herbert. Burke, Republican of Flor- ida, asked the administration to discontinue training 405 Arab mili- tary personnel at U.S. bases since the State Department feels the U.S. should cool off tensions in the Middle East by not selling further jets to Israel. "The State Department informed me by letter that a total of 317 personnel from Arab countries are being trained under the military assistance program and 88 are being trained under the foreign military sales program. Several of these trainees I know are being trained as pilots," Burke said. The congressman said the Arab sol- diers-16 of them Jordanians—are being trained to handle U.S. mili- tary equipment at military bases in this country. "It doesn't make sense for the State Department to recommend against selling further Skyhawks to Israel when at the same time it trains Arab pilots here," Burke said.
