Downing of 4 Egyptian MIGs Part of Plan to Hobble Arab Defense TEL AVIV (JTA) — Israel Air Force jets shot down four Egyp- tian MIG-21s in a dogfight over the Suez Canal Wednesday and continued to pound radar stations and artillery positions in the south- ern and central section of tho waterway. Tuesday. Israeli jets attacked military targets some 20 miles west of the canal for nearly five hours and returned to the same targets for an hour Tuesday night. The objective of the stepped-up air attacks is to prevent the re- deployment of Egyptian ground-to- air missiles. Sources here have said that Israel intends to keep up the attacks to prevent the in- stallation of the new Soviet SAM-3 missile defense systems along the Suez Canal line. No mention was made of SAM missile sites deeper in Egypt. Is- raeli sources say Russian crews are erecting an Egyptian antiair- craft defense line based on the SAM-3s around strategic areas such as Alexandria, Cairo and the Russian-built Aswan High Dam. Wednesday's "kills" in the dog- fight over the canal brought to 80 the number of Egyptian aircraft downed since the June 1967 war. Cairo denied the loss of any planes, but a military spokesman here said four Russian-built inter- ceptors were shot down within five minutes after they took to the air to challenge the Israeli bombers. He said two of the Egyptian pilots were seen bailing out. All Israeli planes returned safely frotin their missions. Three Arab saboteurs were killed Tuesday night in a clash with an Israeli patrol near the Lebanese border. There were no Israeli casualties. A Russian-made Samoval submachine gun was found near the bodies. Earlier, Zariit settlement was fired on from Lebanese territory but no casualties were reported. Two Israeli civilians were killed and 11 injured Monday morning in a mine incident on a Sinai road junction. The two civilians were identified as Zadok Salman, 43, and Claude Levi, 33, of Beersheba, both of them fathers of three children. Levi was killed when a road grader he was operating hit a mine near the Bir Hasanah road junction. A short time later a pickup truck- hit another mine in the same area killing Salman and injuring 11 other occupants of the truck, five of them seriously. Israel Air Force jets attacked an Egyptian radar station at Bal- tim in the Nile Delta Monday and returned safely to base. A military spokesman said the radar station was attacked by Israeli bombers about six weeks ago but was re- paired by the Egyptians, neces- sitating a second attack. Two Israeli civilians and three local Arabs were injured when a hand grenade exploded in Gaza's main street Wednesday morning. Several suspects have been de- tained for questioning. The two Israelis were delivering dairy products to a Gaza store when the explosion occurred. They were hospitalized in Ashkelon, and the Arabs were taken to a local hospital. Last week a number of Arab students boycotted classes in the Gaza Strip to mark the second an- niversary of Israel's attack on the Arab guerrilla base at Karzmeh, Jordan. A grenade exploded at a secondary boys school in Gaza. but no casualities were reported. An earlier grenade blast killed a 70-year-old Arab woman and wounded two others in the Jaba- liya refugee camp, south of Gaza. Arab residents of the area have been victims of recent terrorist attacks as commando organizations attempt to halt cooperation be- tween Israelis and Gaza citizens. One Arab was fatally wounded and 'another Arab and two Is. raelis were injured when a gren- ade exploded in a bus in Falas- tin Square in downtown Gaza Sunday morning. All four were hospitalized. The dead man was identified as a laborer from a refugee camp. Ten Arab guerrillas were killed last Saturday in an encounter with Israel Tourist Growth Foreseen; Minister Kol Describes Progress The attempt of the Arab terror- ists to cut off Israel frOm the world is a complete failure, Israel Tourist Minister Moshe Kol de- clared at a Capital for Israel din- ner Tuesday at Bnai Moshe. "Israel is becoming a world cen- ter of tourism," he said. Foreseeing a 60 to 70 per cent increase in tourism in the next year or two, Kol said last month was the busiest February on rec- ord in the Israel tourist industry, and 36 per cent ahead of Febru- ary. 1969. He stated: "Contracts to invest nearly $80,000.600 for new tourist facil- ities have been signed. A new tour- ist center is planned near Netanya. A Hilton hotel will be built in Jerusalem. Near l y 3,000 hotel rooms are being added now and 5,000 more are planned. "We are planning a new tourist resort at Sharm el Sheikh, that vital area which touched off the Six-Day War. We have four seas to swim in—the Red Sea, the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean Sea. We have snow on Mount Hermon and water skiing at Elat. Perhaps, some day, King Hussein will join us in organizing water sports between Eilat and Aqaba. "With one hand we are defend- ' ing our land and with the other hand we are building Israel. On the program were Rabbis Moses Lehrman and Leon F r a m, Basil Kosarin, honorary secretary of the Detroit Israel Tourist Committee; and Louis E. , Levitan, Detroit CFI representa- tive, who, announced the subscrip- tions. The $100,000,000 tourist indus- try is Isriel's fastest growing source of foreign exchange, even surpassing citrus sales, Levitan said.
