Burton Gordin's Death Called
Great Loss to Bights Struggle

Services were held Monday
morning at Temple Beth El for
Burton I. Gordin, executive direc-
tor of the Michigan Civil Rights
Commission, who was shot fatally
Friday evening.
Mr. Gordin, 50, of 1551 Chateau-
fort, was completing his seventh
year as director of the state CRC,
one of the first of its kind in the
nation. He was found dead in a
parking garage several blocks
from the commission offices. Po-
lice could find no motive or evi-
dence in the slaying.
Gov. Milliken issued the follow-
ing statement in conection with
Mr. Gordin's death:
"The tragic death of Burton Gor-
don stills a major voice in the civil
rights struggle. He served a great
cause with great dedication. His
death is a profound loss to that
cause and to the public whom he
served so well."
A native of Philadelphia. Mr.
Gordin was graduated from
Temple University in 1941. Dur-
ing World War II, he rose from
private to captain. He received
a masters degree in social work
from Bryn Mawr College in 1949,
following two years as a news-
paper reporter in Philadelphia.
Thereafter, he worked for the
Philadelphia Fair Employment
Practices Commission and for 12
years with the Philadelphia Com-
mission on Human Relations.
Mr. Gordin was appointed exec-
utive director of the Michigan Civil
Rights Commission in 1964.
He was a member of the Na-
tional Association of Social Work-
ers, a member of the National As-
sociation of Intergroup Relations
Officials, a board member and past

Cong. Beth Shalom, Free Sons of
Israel and Montefiore Lodge. Born
in Poland, she was a 55-year resi-
dent of the Detroit area.
Survivors are her husband, Lou-

Annie J. Handelsman, a mem-
ber of several Jewish communal
organizations, died Tuesday at
age 83.
Mrs. Handelsman, 980 Whit-
more, was a member of Hadassah
and the sisterhoods of Cong. Shaa-
rey Zedek and Temple Israel. She
also worked for the United Fund.

Born in Russia, Mrs. Handelsman
lived in Detroit 46 years.
She leaves a son, Jay; two
