questions that only the Jewish community can gather. These are
questions on Jewish attitudes, identity and commitment. Data on
these questions cannot be gathered in a government census, which
can only establish basic facts in such areas as age, sex, family struc-

JEWISH IMAGE: It is estimated that about 50 per cent of the
Jewish population in the U.S. resides in New York will begin next
month. In the other three cities, the interviewing is now being com-
pleted. The samole census for the rest of the country will be taken
after the interviewing in New York. The entire project will reach
its end by July.
It will mark the first time the American Jewish community will
get a picture of itsel`. Individual Jewish communities—Chicago, Balti-
more, Detroit, Boston. San Francisco, Milwaukee, New Orleans,
Camden, Des Moines, Providence, Rochester, Columbus, Flint and
others—have undertaken population studies loclly in recent years.
but never was a national survey conducted. As a result of the CJFWF
understking, a more distinct portrait of all elements making up the
American Jewish Community as a whole will emerge.
The CJFWF national study, when completed, will provide informa-
tion on the attitudes of Jews in this country toward various aspects
of Jewish life, patterns of Jewish identification, intermarriage, the
bringing up of children in a Jewish spirit, participation in Jewish
organizations, contributions to Jewish causes, opinions on Judaism,
Jewish family income, interest in the Jewish cultural heritage, the
most favored Jewish fund-raising organizations, stands on American
Jewish aid to Israel, and other basic questions concerning .lewish
life.
Relecting the sentiments of all elements of American Jewry, the
CJFWF census will indicate the direction in which American Jewish
life is going. It will thus be of great value in designing and developing
services best suited to the current and future needs of American Jews.
At the same time it will also provide basic demographic data on
American Jewry—by vocation; age, sex, education—and similar facts
coordinated with the U.S. general census. Technical experts from the
U.S. Census Bureau are assisting the CJFWF in its study.-

JEWISH PERSPECTIVES: The Jewish community in this country
is maintaining a highly organized and vast system of institutions cover-
ing the full complex of welfare, vocational, health, educational, cul-
tural and leisure-time programs in every sizeable city, as well as
large-scale overseas welfare programs. For financing of all these,
a highly developed fund-raising machinery has been developed.
For such programs, basic demographic data is needed but is not
available, except in the roughest estimates. The results of the CJFWF
survey will fill the gap. It will not be limited to or emphasize "head
counting." Rather, its concern will center on questions Jewish leaders
and organizations are asking about the characteristics and changes
in American Jewry, and especially the facts that bear directly upon
sound planning.
The data that will emerge from the answers in the CJFWF study
will provide perspectives related to the nature of Jewish education,
community centers, youth and college campus programs, synagogue
participation. Jewish observance and non-observance, Jewish identifi-
cation or indifference to Judaism, and involvement in financing Jewish
needs. It will also provide regional and national perspectives related
to institutional care, the growing proportion of Jewish aged, and
Jewish migration.
Preliminary data will be made available by the end of this year.
In 1971, experts will prepare detailed analyses by subject matter.
to be distributed to federations. A book for more general use will
appear later. Jewish experts in the field of research are directing
the survey. They include Dr. Fred Massarik of the University of
California; Dr. Morris Axelrod of MIT and Harvard; Dr. Bernard
Lazervits of the University of Missouri; Prof. Albert J. Mayer of the
University of Arizona: Dr. Sidney Goldstein of Brown University;
Stanley K. Bigman of Washington, D.C.; Alvin Chenkin of the CJFWF,
and Saul Kaplan of the Chicago Jewish Federation.
