J.W.V. SUPPLEMENT 1 JWV Memorial Forest

In Israel

'Wishing you continued success

in all your future activities

for the Jewish War Veterans

of the United States of America

LOUIS M. ELLIMAN

Packages to Vietnam Servicemen

Consistent with its leadership
role in the American Jewish corn-
munity, JWV has undertaken to
build a 100.000 tree forest in Israel
which is already well on its way
to fruition. The project is headed
by our past national commander
and Congressional Medal of Honor
winner. Ben Kaufman. Many lead_
ers of JWV have already had •
groves of 1,000 trees or more'
established in their name in this
forest.

Regardless of what your politics concerning the Vietnam War
may be, the fact remains that our American boys are fighting in Viet-
nam. They have no choice in the political discussions. The Jewish
War Veterans Department of Michigan is made up of people, who
have diversified viewpoints on Vietnam, but they are unified in one
viewpoint ... that our American boys in that area must be made as
comfortable as possible, under the circumstances, and they must
know that we have not, nor will ever, forget them.

Headed by committee chairman Ann Rubin, the Jewish War
Veterans and auxiliary have sent at least a thousand packages each
year to servicemen in Vietnam of all races, religions and creeds.
Each package is individually addressed, and many times a package
is returned with a letter from the Defense Department that the ad-
dressee was killed in the line of duty.

Born - September 1921

Died - January 1915

The Sol Yetz-Morris Cohen Post #530 was instituted in January,

1946 to honor the memory of Sol Yetz who made the supreme
sacrifice in Luxembourg, Germany during the "Battle of the

Bulge." During his brief time of service, Sol Yetz was awarded
the Bronze Star for his Valor and Courage. •, He also received

the Purple Heart. "We serve the living in memory of our hon-

ored dead."

These packages have elicited such replies, from these noble
fighting men, as, "the holiday season here can be pretty lonely and
depressing; but it is certainly made much happier and more tolerable
by your wonderful gifts and thoughts of people back home," "when
people at home show their support and concern, it is a great morale
builder to receive a package of goodies, which are worth their weight
in gold to a Marine in the `bush.' Thank you very much," "all the
guys over here, including myself, feel great to know that still some
people care about us over here," I would like to thank you for remem-
bering us servicemen. Its always nice to know that people still back
the G.I. in his endeavors, and I'm proud to say that there are men
who care enough about their country to fight for it." "Thank you very
much for the fantastic package, there is nothing better than receiving
packages from home," "you've brought a touch of home back to me.
If there is anything I can assist you in, please let me know, and I'll
try my best. I know I'm in a situation where I can't help very many
people. Keeping alive is quite a task for a newcomer like myself, but
I'll help you as best I can." "I've found that most good Americans, as
yourselves, are worth a year in Vietnam. I only wish all Americans

are sincere and considerate as you have been to me," "the big joy in
getting a package like you sent is knowing that somebody you don't
know cares enough to go to the trouble to get all the items together
and mailed," "it is deeds like yours that keep a guy's spirits up when
be is so far from those he loves," "at my station are nine other Jewish
personnel for whom I represent and conduct services, and I'm proud
to state we are the only religious group on base with a fine turnout

for services each and every time compared to the other 5,000 military

on base."

Pfc. Joseph 1. Bale Post, No. 414

If there were no other reasons for the existence of a Jewish War
Veterans, this would be sufficient. But, of course, there are hundreds
of more reasons.
