martyrdom, on persecutions and
anti-Semitism, Dr. Baron showed
that through the ages Jews made
contributions to civilizations, that
they developed their gifts in litera-
ture, science, commerce, and that
wherever they lived they had made
their contributions to the nations
among whom they lived, to society
and to humanity.

He also analyzed the conditions
that emerged with emancipation,
linking it with the assimilatory
trends that ensued. He pointed out
that assimilation become an inte-
gral part of emancipation. Thus,
emancipation often was nullified by
assimilation.
Expressing confidence that Jews
will survive and that the trend of
creative efforts will continue. Prof.
Baron said that if we had 100 ded-
icated leaders in five major cul-
tural and social service fields —
education, the rabbinate, the press,
among them—the 500 leaders could
revolutionize Jewish life and uplift
Jewry's position.
Rabbi Irwin Groner outlined the
current cultural program at the
Shaarey Zedek and Prof. Baron
was introduced by Walter L. Field,
chairman of this year's lecture ser-
ies at Shaarey Zedek.
