NEW YORK — A grant from
the U.S. Department of Health,
Education and Welfare has made
it possible for Dr. Jacob Shanon
of the department of dermatology
and venereology of the Hadassah-
Hebrew University Medical Center
to conduct a study of psychoso-
matic skin diseases of 128 patients
who were former inmates of con-
centration camps and to devise
suitable treatment.

These men and women have de-
veloped skin diseases, some of
them previously unkniwn in der-
matological practice, -as a result
of emotional traumatic experience.
Most of them developed these dis-
orders while in the camps. Some
displayed the skin sysptoms as
late reactions often several years
after their release.

Early in the investigation it
became apparent that the skin

Among the speakers was James .

Watts, state chairman of the
NAACP and national coordinator
of the UAW's community action
program. Watts admitted that
while he is no authority on the
Middle East situation, as a fight-
er for the rights of Blacks, "I
know who my friends are." The
Jews — not the Arabs — have
stood by the Blacks in their
civil rights struggle, said Watts, 1
and therefore he was standing by I
the Jews in their support of Is-
rael.

Watts also spoke up for direct
negotiations from the unionist's
point of view. Just as the UAW
won't let a third party do its bar- ,
gaining for the union, neither
should Israel let the Big Powers
impose any decisions on Israel, he
said.
Watts' support of direct talks
was echoed by Tom Turner, chair-
man of the Detroit NAACP and
president of the Metropolitan De-
troit AFL-CIO, who was not a
member of the panel but spoke
from the floor.
A historical survey of Israel's
struggle was given by Unitarian
minister Bev. Robert Marshall
who drew the analogy between Is-
rael's position and that of a home-
owner who is attacked by his
neighbors for defending himself
from attackers.
Attorney Bruce Miller, Wayne
County Democratic Party chair-
man, said that while he is "not
a Zionist," he supports Israel as
a democratic state in a sea of
totalitarianism. He pointed out that
while Egypt is accepting Soviet
arms aid, the Communist Party
is not legal there. The party is,
however, legal in Israel.
When a student who described
himself as a "Palestinian refugee"
took the floor to state that Israel
should negotiate with the El Fatah'
guerrilla organization, Miller re-
torted that it is not Israel but the
Arabs who must determine who
their negotiator is to be.
Other panelists were Al Port-

noy, chairman of the WSU
Hillel Foundation; Mordecai Tel-
Tsur, head of the Hebrew de-
partment at the Jewish Center,
who described the problems of

disorders from which these pa-
tients were suffering could not
be successfully treated by a
dermatologist without knowl-
edge of psychiatry or by a
psychiatrist without sufficient
knowledge of dermatology.
Dr. Shanon is trained in both

these disciplines and as a result
is able to head Hadassah's out-
patient department of jsychoso-
matic dermatology. He established
the first psychosomatic dermatol-
ogy clinic in the world at the Uni-
versity of Cincinnati. Later he re-
turned to Jerusalem to establish a
similar clinic in Hadassah-Hebrew
University Medical Center.
Dr. Shanon found that among
476 patients who had been in con-
centrate camps, 27 percent devel-
oped phychosomatic skin disord-
ers, while 1,467 who had not been
in camps, only 10 percent devel-
oped such disorders Deep suffer-
ing, prpfound grief, guilt feelings,
suppressed protest and rebellion,
are all part of the emotional pat-
tern which results in recurrent
skin diseases among the survivors.
