While Slave 'Kidnap' Incident Ended in France THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS New 12—Friday, March 13, 1970 Veteran U.S. Editor Critical of Way Press Prints Arab 'Fabrications' WASHINGTON (JTA)—A veter- an American editor expressed sharp criticism of American news- paper coverage of the Arab-Israeli conflict charging that the Ameri- can press "misinforms and mis- leads many millions of newspaper readers" by equating "verifiable facts" from the Israeli side with "fabricated reports" from the Arabs. Philip Hochstein, former senior editor of the Newhouse newspaper organization and publisher of the Washington Jewish Week, reprint- ed a report by Roy Essoyan, Mid- dle East correspondent of the As- sociated Press, in the bulletin of the American Society of News- paper Editors, in which the cor- respondent asserted that it is not possible for a newsman to obtain first-hand information on the war situation on the Arab side. He also quoted another article in the bulletin, by Alfred Friendly of the Washington Post, describing Israel as a free society in which reporters enjoy the basic freedoms of the press. Essoyan wrote in the ASNE bul- letin that "Tbe main problem with covering the war from the Arab side is the Arabs won't let you j/wian, CUSTOM FURNITURE & CARPET CLEANING ON LOCATION Phone 549-7170 anywhere near it" He noted com- munications difficulties and that "censorship is rough and frequent- ly illogical." He declared that "Most major Arab news breaks— the coups, assassinations, execu- tions and Arab-Israeli battles that provide our daily news fare—are first announced over government radio stations." These communiques, Essoyan said, "are seldom prompt or im- partial but they are usually all you'll get from the Arab side." The AP correspondent pointed out, "Freedom of the press is a concept foreign to the Arab world. The Arabs regard the press and radio as propaganda branches of the government. Out- side of Lebanon, that's what they are." Editorially commenting on Es- soyan's statements, Hochstein sug- gested that "our newspapers are guilty of peddling partisan propa- ganda disguised as news when they fail each time they' publish such an item to clearly label it as com- ing from a country that does not permit free access to information." He stressed that "Editors have no right to equate Arab reports with reports from Israel when Arab states permit no free reporting whereas Israel affords freedom and cooperation to independent and even hoStile reporters." The editor declared that "the very least of this offense is that the American press thereby gives the best of the deal to those coun- tries that give reporters the least facility, while in effect punishing Israel for making reporting a com- mon right and even a pleasant exercise. The serious part of this offense is that it misinforms and misleads many millions of news- paper readers." - 'White Power' Rally Cancellation Leads to Appeal for Redress South Haven, Michigan Wholesome, Exciting CAMP JUDAEA Jewish-Israeli Atmosphere Sponsored by Midwest Hadassah Zionist Youth Commision TWO 3-week sessions For boys and girls 4th thru 9th grade June 28 . . . FOR INFORMATION CALL 538-3929 WASHINGTON (JTA) — The neo-Nazi National Socialist White People's Party will seek court re- , dress over the Arlington County School Board's cancellation of its permit for a "white power" rally at Yorktown High School. The per- mit was revoked because Jews and Negroes were to be barred. The National Capital Area Am- erican Civil Liberties Union, while ' opposing a restrictive public meet- ing, announced it would sue on behalf of the party's right to "hold a public meeting that is open to all or a private meeting for their own membership." The rumors that cropped up in the provincial city about three weeks ago are dying out, and life there is steadily returning to nor- mal, it was reported. ' The rumor epidemic in Amiens was strikingly similar to one that occurred in Orleans more than a year ago. Unlike the latter, it vic- timized more non-Jewish than Jew- ish shopkeepers. It came to public attention when a complaint was lodged by a non-Jew, Mrs. Blanche Dupont. As was the case in Orleans, the origin of the rumors was obscure and could not be traced to any group or individual. They held that certain shopkeep- ers lured women into their pre- mises, drugged them and sold them RADOM TAILORS and CLOTHIERS 22141 COOLIDGE Daily, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Thurs., 9 a.m.-9 p.m. . OAK.
