to "teach" faith?

Our doubts disappeared when,
after making "wine" (fresh grape

Writer With Pride

Editor, The Jewish News:
I read your comments on Milton
Friedman with considerable inter-
est (JN, Feb. 20). Mr. Friedmaa's
parents were members of my con-
gregation in Portsmouth, Va. Mil-
ton Friedman attended our Talmud
Torah through and past his Bar
Mitzva years.
Having taught hm personally. I
always took pride in the positive
attitude he took in his writings on
Jewish affairs. According to the
Talmud, one may take justifiable
pride in one's "chldren and disci-
ples."

A History of the

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Drug ad-
diction, has now reached Israel—
although to a much smaller degree
than in the U.S. The most popular
drug in Israel is hashish, imported
from Jordan and Lebanon, in con-
trast to America where LSD,
heroin and marijuana are most
prominent.
Abraham Turnow, government
pharmacist of the Tel Aviv dis-
trict, has estimated that there are
now 20,000 Israeli users of hashish.
However, many police officers and
physicians believe that Turnow's
estimates are too low. They con-
tend that hashish smokers in Israel
may now number as many as
80,000 or 100,000.
The Israel papers believe that
there are two factors responsible
for this growing use of narcotics:
the open door policy in the li-
berated areas, which are centers
of hashish cultivation, and the
influx of Americans who have
come to study in Israel univer-
sities, and who are also responsible
for the introduction of LSD and
heroin.
