MOVIE GUIDE

DOWNTOWN

with the fall of the Romanoffs half
a century ago. The veteran film
maker originally planned to shoot
a great deal of the film on actual
locations in Russia, especially at
the center of the tragedy, the Win-
ter Palace in St. Petersburg, now
Leningrad. However, no agreement
with the Soviets was reached and
Spiegel now contemplates to con-
jure up the vastness of the Russian
empire via stereo-optical "process
plates." We watched a test at Pine-
wood with a winter landscape and
the imperial palace pre-photo-
graphed in the background while
a sled with a princess of yester-
year arrived right in front of the
camera.
Spiegel is trying to sign Princess
Grace (Kelly) for the leading role
of Czarnia Alexandra, which would
supply the wife of the ruling mon-
arch of Monaco with the vehicle of
a spectacular screen comeback.
The producer himself has not been
active since the two unsuccessful
ventures, "The Night of the Gen-
erals" and "The Swimmer."

My 9th Return
Visit to Israel

By Rev. Dr. Carl Hermann Voss

(Editor's Note: Dr. Voss, a Protestant
clergyman, has for many years sup-
ported the establishment of a Jewish
national homeland and conducted
study tours of Israel and the Arab
states. Author of two books on the
Israeli-Arab conflict, he has also
written "Rabbi and Minister" (Steph-
en S. Wise and John Haynes Holmes)
and "In Search of Meaning: Living
Religions of the World." He is the
editor of an inter-faith anthology,
"The Universal God," and of a re-
cent book, "Stephen S. Wise: Servant
of the People-Selected Letters." He
is editor of Excalibur Books.)

Having just returned from my
ninth trip to Israel-my initial visit
to Palestine was in 1947 - I am
often asked: "What do you think of
it now?"
My response is that I am Mi-
p r esse db
by four
o ma
ma jor factors

(1) The beauty and dignity of the
unified Jerusalem, so breathtaking
and awesome in its majesty;
(2) The increasing tempo of
modernization in the entire land,
both agriculturally and industri-
ally, in contrast to an under-
developed, semi-agrarian Pales-
tine of the British Mandate from
the early 1920s to the late 1940s;

(3) The courage and tenacity of
the people, unafraid and determin-
ed despite constant harassment by
the terrorist Al Fatah, steady
bombardments from Jordan in the
east, Lebanon in the north, Syria
in the northeast, and Egypt on the
western flank;
(4) The apparent desire of the
Israelis for peace, coupled with a
willingness to forge a Middle East-
ern federation where Arab and Jew
would work together in friendship.
Realistic facts in this Middle
East situation point to Israel's en-
circlement by hostile lands, not
only Arab nations, but the Soviet
Union and France as well. Russia
has the largest stake in the Medi-
terranean, pouring in arms and
providing technicians in expecta-
tion of securing the balance of
power. The chief beneficiaries of
this largesse of the Soviet Union
are the United Arab Republic, Iraq
and Syria.

Our own government, backing
and filling in accord with the
pattern of three decades, re-
assures Israel on the one hand,
and, in the next moment, courts
the Arab governments by af-
firming "no change in policy."
To me, the poise and courage of

Israel in the midst of this confusion

are remarkable. Not only do the

threatened by inflation and a dan-
gerous lack of cash reserves. They
also nurture their burgeoning cul-
ture, this renaissance of Hebraic
arts and letters.
In the 22nd year of its existence,
Israel is robust and brave. Israel
will not die ... it must not die.

It is certain that to most men
the preparation for death has been
a greater torment than the suffer-
ing of it.-Montaigne.
