Institute on Israel Draws
40 Washtenaw Clergymen

Despite efforts of the University
of Michigan Arab Student Associa-
tion to throw a wrench in the
event, an institute on Israel and
the Middle East drew more than
40 Christian clergymen, according
to Kenneth Bronson, president of
the Washtenaw County Jewish
Community Council, which spon-
sored the institute.
Bronson reports that the dialogue
between Jewish community and
the Christian clergy "has been con-
siderably opened up and improved"
as a result of the Feb. 16 institute.

Dr. G. Merrill Lenox, head of the
Washtenaw County Council of
Churches, helped organize the pro-
gram, and speakers included Dr.
William Haber, professor of eco-
nomics and adviser to the execu-
tive officers at U. of M., and Dr.
Abraham Kaplan of the depart-
ment of philosophy.
There were no hostile questions
during the long discussion period,
said Bronson, who added that
most of the questioners were in-
terested in facts and sought an
understanding of religious or
theological matters brought up in
the talks by the two speakers.
"The hard sell was not used,"
said Bronson, "but neither were any
punches pulled about Six Million
dead with hardly a Christian hand
in Western civilization uplifted to
protect them, either before, during
or after the event, and the likeli-
hood of seeing the remnant de-
stroyed in Israel in a similar repe-
tition occurring; nor were any
punches pulled on theology or any
other matter concerning our involve-
ment with the state of IsraeL
Nevertheless these points were
raised in an unemotional and we
believe constructive manner."
Bronson said the Arab student
group sent every Christian clergy-
man in the county a copy of a let-
ter by Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum, the
noted ecumenicist, in which he
suggested that Christian clergy-
men's hostility to Israel might be
based on a theory that required
the Jews to suffer for their sins
and possibly on latent anti-Semit-
ism.
Despite the Arab students' efforts
to discourage attendance — which
may have kept several clergymen
away—the Washtenaw Community
Council considered the institute a
considerable success, said Bronson.
