GENEVA—A Middle East arms
embargo was urged—indirectly-
by chief U.S. disarmament negoti-
ator Gerard C. Smith as the Gene-
va Disarmament Conference re-
sumed meetings after a four-month
break.
Head of the U.S. Arms Control
and Disarmament Agency, Smith
said there that it was Washing-
ton's "position to encourage ar-
rangements for regional arms lim-
itation, or other steps that would
reduce competition among nations
for costly weapons, often sought
for illusory prestige."
It was believed that his state-
ment referred to the apparently
escalating arms race in the Mid
East. There was no response from
the Soviet embassador.

Comparative Religion
Seat Endowed at Dropsie
PHILADELPHIA — A Harry Z.
Harris Chair in Comparative Reli-
gion at Dropsie University was
established at a dinner here this
week. The professorship was made
possible by an endowment from the
will of the late Harry Z. Harris,
Rochester attorney and civic lead-
er, who died in 1968.
Mr. Harris served for many
years as a member of the board of
governors at Dropsie. He also pro-
vided grants to Cornell University,
where he received his law degree,
to Rochester University and to the
Yeshiva Medical College in New
York City.
`Gallows of Baghdad'
on View at NY Art Center
NEW YORK—The first Ameri-
can showing of Abraham Rattner's
monumental series of paintings,
"The Gallows of Baghdad," will
go on view at the New School Art
Center, Manhattan, Thursday.
.Rattner, 75, who taught at the
New School for Social Research
from 1948 to 1951, now makes his
home in Paris. He painted the 36
gouaches, one oil and two oil tryp-
tics within two months after he
heard that 16 persons, including
nine Jews, were hanged as spies
for Israel in the public square
of Baghdad amid the jubilation
of a large crowd of onlookers.
Knesset Holds Memorial
Service for Levi Eshkol
JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Knes-
set held memorial services for the
late Premier Levi Eshkol on the
occasion of the first anniversary of
his death.
President Zalman Shazar was
present. Speaker of the Knesset
Reuben Barkat delivered a eulogy.
A minute's silence was observed,
and the Knesset adjourned for a
half hour before resuming its regu-
lar business.
Literature is for the most part
an idealization of quarrels. Cut
guards out of literature, and you
will have very little history or
drama or fiction or epic poetry
left. —Robert Lynd
