Christopher Davis' Novel 'Ishmael.' a Story of Pain

with Genesis. The author devotes
a prefatory page to quoting from
Genesis: "And the child grew
and was weaned. And Abraham
made a great feast on the day
that Isaac was weaned. And
Sarah saw Ishmael the son of
Hagar the Egyptian, whom she
had borne unto Abraham, mak-
ing sport. Whereupon she said
unto Abraham: Cast out this
bondswoman and her son; for
the son of this bondswoman shall
not be heir with my son, even
with Isaac."

LOW-CALORIE CHOCOLATE

A chocolate mousse is a very
rich and delicate dessert. With in-
gredients like eggs, sugar, whipped
cream and chocolate, which a
mousse is made of, how can you
fail? But if you are constantly on a
diet — all those marvelous ingre-
dients are a "no-no." In this case,

Ishmael grew to be father to fu-
ture generations and the story
acknowledges it, listing the sons,
taking account of Ishmael having
lived 137 years, concluding:
"These words and all of the
foregoing are the art of Ishmael,
inventor: son of Abraham, Prince
and beloved of God."
That's the story of one favored by
God in spite of the expulsion front
Abraham's household. The novel is
unique, challenging, worth reading
in view of the current cousin: con-
flict between Isaac and Ishmael,
Jew and Arab.

The recipe for Yeast Cake in last
week's column by Ruth Sirkis er-
roneously omitted three eggs from
the list of ingredients.
