JWV Commander Meets With President Nixon Friday, February 13, 1970-19 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Denies Alleg ation She Sent Captured Soviet A rms to Biafra JERUSALEM (JTA)—A govern- hostility on the part of Nigerian ment spokesman has categorically authorities toward Israel and other denied that Israel sent captured Russian arms to Biafra during its two-year war of secession with Nigeria. That allegation was made by an unnamed source at the United Nations. A foreign ministry spokesman said it was a "transparent at- tempt" by the Arabs to inject fur- ther disruptive elements into the somewhat strained relations be- tween Israel and Nigeria. The allegation was picked up by UN correspondents and widely re- ported in the world press as com- ing from a "reliable soure." The claim was that Israel sent to Bi- afra at least two planeloads of Soviet-made weapons captured from the Arabs in the Six-Day War. According to the source, Israel had two motives—to bolster the Biafrans who are mainly Chris- tian, against Nigeria which is largely Moslem and a "potential ally" of the Arab states; and to discredit the Soviet Union. WASHINGTON, D.C.—The national commander of the Jewish War Veterans, Bernard B. Direnfeld of Cleveland, presented the JWV "Medal of Merit" to President Richard M. Nixon at a meeting in the White House. Commander Direnfeld was accompanied by national executive director Felix M. Putter. man of Washington and national consultant Dr. Seymour Weisman, of Norwalk, Conn. According to Direnfeld, his talk with the President was wide-ranging and included Vietnam, the Middle East, and the status of the draft. In making the presentation, Direnfeld cited the President's long interest in veterans' work. He pointed out that Nixon, as vice president, in 1954, officiated at the dedication of the National Shrine to Jewish War Dead in Washington. The foreign ministry spokesman said Israel neither sold nor gave weapons, Soviet or otherwise, to Biafra. But Israel, along with many other nations and interna- tional relief organizations, sent food and medical supplies to Biafra through the International Red Cross. This has led to a pronounced There were no reports of an Immediate slackening of busi- ness in shops that specialize in American cigarettes, and such Imported delicacies as sausages, caviar, sardines and salmon, which have doubled in price overnight because of higher tar- iffs. Locally-made beers, wines and brandies of better than aver- age quality also have gone up in price as a result of the new sales taxes. For the time being, however, the prices of television sets, tape tee- orders and various electrical appli- •ances remain the same following a heavy tax rise on them last year. Government sources noted that automobiles and other hard goods affected by the new taxes account for less than half of 1 per cent of Israel's cost of living index. Meanwhile, some leaks have ap- peared in the labor-management- government "package deal" that is supposed to curb wage, price and tax increases for the coming fiscal year. Professional employes are de- manding wage hikes far in excess of the 8 per cent agreed to in the three-party deal. U.S. Auto in Israel Costs $11,500 as Sales Taxes Soar JERUSALEM (JTA)—Imported automobiles cost Israelis today as much as four times more than they would have paid Sunday as a re- sult of new sales taxes posted by the government Monday. The sales taxes, plus increased ownership and license plate fees and defense surcharges are ex- pected to yield about half of the $35,000,000 additional revenue that the government says it must have this year. The balance will come from higher levies on local and imported beers, wines, foodstuffs, stoves, cameras, office machinery and a welter of other items. A Chrysler Valiant, an Ameri- can compact car, now costs $11,500 FOB. A European medium-size car, such as the French Peugeot, a favorite of the Israel middle class, is priced at just under $7.- 000. Licenses and other fees have gone up in the amount of $30 a year for small cars and $70 for medium-size vehicles. But Israeli Treasury sources said that they didn't think car sales would fall off. They based their opinion on the fact that there are no appreciable declines in car sales when taxes were raised the last time, less than a year ago. countries that supplied humani- tarian aid to the Biafrans, since Biafra's surrender last month. as Sales Representative I am as near as your phone SHORE CHEVROLET 12240 JOS. Replying on behalf of President Nixon to questions raised by JWV National Commander Bernard B. Direnfeld about the abandonment of the base to the new leftist re- gime in Libya, a State Department official told of steps to be taken to remove strategic equipment. David D. Newsom, asistant secretary of state for African affairs, wrote at the request of the President. Newsom said that "we are under no obligation whatever to provide the Libyan government with an equipped or useful facil- ity. Material and equipment required for missions being transferred elsewhere are being removed. All other U.S. property and equipment is being carefully screened according to strict cri- teria before any final decision affecting ultimate disposition is made." Newsom indicated that perma- nent construction at the $77,000,000 base, including buildings, roads, runways, would be left for the Libyan air force. While conceding that Wheelus could become a base for attacks against Israel, Newsom pointed out that other airfields exist in Libya and also that there is a factor in- volving the distance of Wheelus from Israeli targets.
