Israeli Jets Fly Near Cairo, Raid 2 Suburbs (From JTA and Related Wire Services) CAIRO — Four Israeli warplanes raided two of Cairo's suburbs Wednesday, hitting three buildings, killing three persons and injuring 12 others, a military spokesman was quoted by United Press Inter- national. It was the closest raid to Cairo since the Six-Day War. Beginning 10 a.m. the Israeli warplanes launched raids against what Tel Aviv described as military bases at El Maadin, six miles south of Cairo and Dahshur, 18 miles South of the city. The El Maadin raids, closest to Cairo since 1967, sent waves of Israeli jets over Cairo itself, draw- ing fire throughout the 15-minute resistance to the Israeli jets in a series of Cairo area raids that began Jan. 7. U P I correspondent Raymond Wilkinson reported from Cairo that power went off in the city for a few minutes but was later restored. The cause of the power failure was not immediately determined. The raid against El Maadin was interpreted as another Israeli ef- fort to demonstrate to the capital's residents the ineffectiveness of the Egyptian air force. Israel Air Force jets scored hits on a 120-ton Egyptian navy auxiliary vessel southeast of Shadwan island in the Gulf of Suez Sunday morning. The craft, which is used as a troop and supply carrier, went out of con- trol and grounded on a reef. An Israeli military spokesman said anti-aircraft gunners aboard the Egyptian vessel opened fire on the Israeli planes prior to being attacked. Last Friday night, Israeli forces ended their 32-hour occupation of Shadwan after removing all port- able equipment including an entire British-built Decca radar station and large quantities of arms, am- munition and other military hard- ware. Israeli sources estimate that a total of 70 Egyp- tians were killed in the Shadwan operation which began early Thurs- day morning, and 60 prisoners were taken. The dead included the crews of two Soviet-made Egyptian torpedo boats sunk by Israeli aircraft off Shadwan on Thursday. A foreign correspondent selected to visit the island on behalf of a pool of for- eign journalists reported that the Israeli evacuation went smoothly and there were no signs of any Egyptians on the island, in the air or on the sea. His report re- futed claims by Cairo that Egyp- tian forces had driven the Israelis off Shadwan. Israel Defense Minister Moshe Dayan said on a radio interview Saturday that "all of Egypt is a battlefield." He said Israel was not interested in conquering more territory but "as far as military objectives are concerned, there are no limitations." Gen. Dayan said that Israel's policy of striking targets anywhere in Egypt was aimed at halting or at least diminishing Egypt's prepa- rations for anew war against Is- rael. He described it as a "static" policy with strategic objectives. Gen. Dayan said Israel's first • Upper left photo shows the lighthouse near the Egyptian island of Shadwan after the island was seized by Israeli air- borne troops Jan. 22.
