Sam Spiegel announces that
Charles Jarrott, the young English
director of Hal B. Wallis' "Anne
of the Thousand Days," has been
signed to direct, "Nicholas and
Alexandra,'-' filmic version of the
international bestseller by Robert
K. Massie. The motion picture is
being made by Spiegel for Colum-
bia, a company that released the
veteran producer's highly success-
ful "Lawrence of Arabia" and
"The Bridge on the River Kwai."
Screenplay for "Nicholas and
Alexandra" is by James Goldman
who won the Academy Award for
another shattering historical
drama, "The Lion in Winter."

Harold Cohen and Edward
Lewis are producing and John
Frankenheimer currently directs
on location in Tennessee, filmiza-
tion of Madison Jones novel, "An
Exile," relabeled for the screen as
"I Walk the Line." Gregory Peck
portrays the central character of a
rural sheriff, who, bored with life,
misplaced in society, tries to make
a break for what he considers a
last ditch effort to find happiness
for himself. In this case, the choice
for happiness is beautiful Tuesday
Weld, while Estelle Parsons, last
year's "Oscar" winner, appears as
this year's loser.

Howard Minsky makes his bow
as producer; with David Golden
as his executive and Arthur Hil-
ler directing, with Paramount's
"Love Story," an original movie
yarn by Prof. Erich Segal of
Yale. Ryan O'Neal portrays the
starring role of a college stu-
dent who falls in love with Ali
MacGraw. She is the young
actress who became an over
night sensation after the release
of "Goodbye, Columbus," to us
a rather unpleasant caricature
of middle-class Jewish life in
New York. "Love Story" has a
double meaning, since Miss Mac-
, Graw just married Robert
Evans, vice president in charge
of production at Paramount.

Danny Kaye came to Hollywood
in 1943 under contract to Samuel
Goldwyn, completing a total of 16
pictures in twenty years. The last
one before his long hiatus was
"The Man From the Diner's Club,"
a slapstick comedy not much liked
by the public, the press and by
himself. Rave reviews of his per-
formance as the philosophical rag-
picker in "The Madwoman of Chail-
lot," a picture in which he was
singled out as the only asset, make
him search for other serious movie
roles. He is currently considering
to portray "Don Quixote" in Ron-
ald Lubin's forthcoming motion
picture production contemplated
for a March 1970 starting date in
Colombia, South America. Thus the
son of an immigrant Jewish-Ukran-
ian tailor may rise to the grandeur
of Spanish knighthood in the im-
mortal work from the pen of Cer-
vantes.

Philadelphia Federation
Studies New Approach
to College Students

PHILADELPHIA (JTA)-A study
committee of the Federation of
Jewish Agencies is considering
several recommendations for re-
organizing campus programs for
Jewish students, according to a
report by Barton E. Ferst, presi-
dent of the Jewish Exponent and
chairman of the federation study
committee on college youth.
He reported on federation con-
sideration of the problem of alie-
nated college youth at a meeting
of the federation's Young Men's
Service Committee. He declared
that because the college years are
considered the most formative in-
tellectually for students, local Jew-
ish federations had been asking
themselves if they had been in
error in not communicating effec-
tively with the large Jewish college
group and in not bringing the stu-
dents into the organized Jewish
community.
