5 Rabbis, Back From Israel, Urge Detroit Jewry Aid WA Jewish Groups Intervene on Behalf of Objector NEW YORK (JTA) — Two ma- jor American Jewish organizations have filed friend of the court briefs with the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of a conscientious objector who refused induction into the armed forces because he was opposed to the Vietnam War on moral and ethical grounds. In intervening in the ease of John Heffron Sisson Jr., the Amer- ican Jewish Congress and the American Jewish Committee are challenging the constitutionality of the Selective Service Act which recognizes conscientious objection only on the basis of religious be- liefs. Both briefs argue that by granting exemption from mili- tary service to persons opposed to war by reason of "religious training and belief," the act accords preferential treatment to believers over nonbelievers in violation of the First Amend- ment. Philly Girls' Residence to Be Studied With Grant PHILADELPHIA—The Associa- tion for Jewish Children has re- ceived a grant of $20,326 from the Children's Fund, established by Mr. and Mrs. Lessing Rosenwald. The grant will finance a research study to evaluate the social adjust- ment of girls who lived in the agency's girls' residence since its opening in 1959 to the present. The girls' residence was estab- lished for adolescent youngsters who could not live with their fam- ilies and for whom care in an agency foster home would not be appropriate. The agency also operates two residences for adolescent boys, places children in foster homes, has an adoption department and a program for the girl who is preg- nant and unmarried.
