Israeli Jets Strike at Saboteurs in Jordan

TEL AVIV (JTA) — An Israeli
armored reconnaissance force en-
tered Jordan Tuesday night in a
mop-up operation against sabo-
teurs believed responsible for a
recent wave of rocket attacks on
the potash plant at Sdom on the
south shore of Dead Sea.
The armored unit was sunoorted
by Israeli Air Force jets in o"era-
lions that kept them on Jordanian
soil for some 20 hours. A military
snokesman announced that the
force returned to its base at 2 n.m.
local time Wednesday without sus-
taining casualties or damage to its
equipment.
He said f ive saboteurs were
killed in a clash near the Jordan-
ian village of El Saffi and that a
number of vehicles bearing El
Fatah insirmia. including an armed
jeep were damaged.
Defence Minister Moshe Pavan
said Wednesday that Israeli ac-
tion against Jordan is restricted
because of Political considera-
tion. He said that both Jordan
and Israel are supported by the
U.S., "and we may face a diffi-
cult situation along the Jordan-
ian frontier."
Gen. Pavan snake to angry set-
tlers of Kibutz Maoz Haim in the
Beisan Valley, who are demanding
action to halt the almost daily at-
tacks from Jordanian territory. He
rejected a sur=r, ostion that Israeli
forces wive the Gilead Heights fac-
inn the Beisan Valley.
But he pledged that Israel's
armed forces would do their ut-
most to protect life and pron-rty
in the Beisan and Jordan valleys.

Referring to the Political restric-
tions that bar Israel from taking

where the Russians are, we have
more freedom of action than
against Jordan."
Israel's potash and chemical
plant at Sdom came under heavy
attack by Soviet-made Katyusha
rockets just after midnight Mon-
day. There were no casualties but
some damage was sustained and
electric power lines were put out
of commission for several hours.
The attack was the longest and
heaviest yet carried out against
the potash works. Israeli authori-

tered hundreds of windows and in-
jured patients in a nearby Arab
hospital early Monday.
The blast went off on a window
ledge of the Khaddouri Louis Zilka
Charity Foundation School which
has been under special police
guard since 'Me Six-Day War. A
Lebanese security official said the
explosion was the work of "crimi-
nal elements" trying to defame
