Professional Aliya Movement-PATWA
Is Commemorated on 25th Anniversary
By LUCIEN HARRIS
(Chairman, 1947-1948)
In the midst of World War II,
when the tide of battle was turn-
ing and the Allies were launching
a massive onslaught on the Nazi
bastions in Europe, the thoughts
of many British Zionists focused
on the role they should play when
victory would come to the forces
of freedom.
Thousands of British Zionists
were then serving in His Majesty's
Forces — air, sea and land — on
many fronts and cherished the
hope that when peace came and
brought self-determination to many
nations, Jewish national independ-
ence in Palestine also would be
achieved.
Active in Youth Movements
In the pre-war years, many of
them had been active in the vari-
ous Zionist youth movements in
Britain, such as the University
Zionist Federation, Habonim, the
Association of Young Zionist Socie-
ties, the Federation of Zionist
Youth and Torah va'Avoda. A
certain number of their contem-
poraries had chosen the road to
bityashvut and kibutz life by join-
ing the Hehalutz, Hashomer Hat-
zair and Bachad movements and
later helped to found a whole
series of "British" kibutzim in
Eretz Yisrael. The majority of the
members of the Zionist youth
movements however, had not
chosen the kibutz as their way of

When the 25th anniversary of
the foundation of PATWA in Bri-

at a reunion in Jerusalem, hun-

ernment officials. Nine former na-
tional chairmen of British PATWA
(out of 13 in all) have settled in
Israel. All expressed the hope that
the principles on which PATWA
work had been based—especially
"the human touch," and careful
vocational guidance—would be of

Whenever prominent visitors from
Palestine arrived in London, they
were sought out by the various
professional sections of PATWA,
which arranged for their mem-
bers to have personal interviews
with prospective employers and
to receive first-hand information
on developments in their field in
Palestine.
During the War of Liberation
(1948), the PATWA office in Jeru-
salem was incorporated into the
Jewish Agency Youth and Heha-
lutz Department, and PATWA
offices and associations were then
promoted in the United States,
South Africa, America, Scandin-
avia and other parts of the world.

life and on the other hand were
not sufficiently well-to-do to avail
themselves of the "capitalist" cer-
tificates issued under British man-
datory regulations.
Refusing to believe that because,
they had no place in the "halutz"
or "capitalist" quotas they must
forever be excluded from the
ranks of organized aliya, a few of
them decided to strike out on a
new and independent path within
the World Zionist Movement.
Thus, one Sunday in 1944, at a
meeting which took place at the
Jewish Agency headquarters at 77
Great Russell Street, London, the
PATWA movement was founded.
PATWA (Professional and Tech-
nical Workers' Aliya) aimed at
gathering together into its ranks
and preparing for aliya many of
those former young Zionists whose
professional and technical training
and experience made them well-
equipped for service in the Jewish
National Home and in the institu-
tions and economy of the Jewish
State as yet unborn.
Professional Groupings
PATWA organized its members

to study Hebrew and keep abreast
with Eretz Israel affairs and to
start saving in order to finance
their ultimate aliya after the war.
Of the nine original founding
members of PATWA in 1944,
seven came on aliya, including
the first chairman, Dr. Eli Davis
(the deputy-superintendent of a
London hospital during the blitz
and now professor of internal
medicine at Hadassah) and the
first honorary secretary, Walter
Eytan, Israel's present embassa-
dor to Erance. PATWA became
affiliated on a non-political group
basis to the Zionist, Federation of
Great Britain and Ireland and was
thus able to draw into its ranks
not only members of - various poli-
tical and religious parties within
Zionism, but also the unaffiliated
Zionist who shared its ideals and
aspirations.
As soon as communications be-
came easier between Palestine
and Britain, contact was establish-
