Dr. Theodor Reik,
Protege of Freud

NEW YORK - Dr. Theodor
Reik, 81, a protege of Sigmund
Freud and author of many books
on psychoanalysis, died here Dec.
31 at age 81.
An impoverished psychology stu-
dent at the University of Vienna
when he met Freud in 1910, Dr.
Reik remained his friend until
Freud's death in 1939. He took his
doctorate in phychology in 1912,
the first awarded in that subject
by the university.
He practiced in Vienna until
1928, when he moved to Berlin.
With the rise of Hitler, he moved
to the llague. Again the Nazis
threatened, and in 1938 he fled
to the U.S. with $8.
Here, he helped found the Na-
tional Psychological Association
for Psychoanalysis. He continued
to teach, write and see patients in
his Theodor Reik Clinic into the
mid-60s.
