TAKE THE FAMILY OUT TO DINNER AND A SHOW . n ay, January 9, 1 970 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS ONE OF ITS VERY active members was almost "lost" to the Garden City jail by the City of Hope Cancer Fighters . . . Bar- bara Weintraub and husband Mur- ry went out to pick up blue banks without identification . . . One of the stops happened to be the po- lice station . . . Murry waited in the car while Barbara went in for the banks . . . Jokingly, Barbara said, "If I'm not out in 10 minutes, call the police" ... So Marry wait- ed, wondered, worried and wan- dered into the station . . . A half- hour of interrogation and many signed forms later, Barbara and Murry were released . . . (Back in 1959, now president Shirley Gor- don was picking up blue banks on Livernois and discovered she did not even have a membership card herself with which to give proper identification! . . .• T'wris mighty cold out the day and Shirley's red nose soon joined the very red coloring in her face!) MICHAEL GRUSKY, six-year- old son of Ruth and Sam Grusky, was told by his -teacher that she heard he had a new baby at his house . .. "Aw, I don't think he's so very new," replied little Mi- chael. "The way he cries he must have had lots of experience." HEY, STEVE PETIX . . what- ever happened to that idea you had back in 1959 of suit jackets without outside pockets? . . . The 79th Convention then (11 years ago in Feb.) of the Custom Tailors and Designers in Miami Beach also brought in no lapels . . . That idea we can do without . . the other has possibilities . . that is, except for pickpockets! SOL BOBBINS, pharmaceutical expert, waded through San Fran- cisco's Chinatown recently, for hours and hours, thrashing his way among the crowded condi- tions of the little side streets in search of an authentic Chinese souvenier to bring back home? ... He finally bought an old letter opener that seemed to be just what he -vas looking for . . . Re- turning to Detroit, Sol proudly showed it to his partner, Sandor Siegel, who squintingly examined it and then suddenly pointed to some very tiny, almost obscure lettering in a hidden section of the letter opener . . . "Made in Ja- pan!" . . . But Sol shouldn't feel too bad .. . Joel Sternberg had a set of "authentic" chop sticks sent to him as a present . . . They were made in Japan, too! CALLING PHIL LEVANT . . . Remberthg back in 1959 as one of the owners of the Henrose Hotel (formerly Barium) when you re- ceived this letter in the mail? ... "Sir, I would appreciate your con- sidering giving me a job. I be- lieve I am well qualified to up- hold my position in your establish- ment. I speak two foreign lan- guages, Spanish and Hebrew. I am effective in mathematics and I have a good English background. If you grant me an interview, I can state my qualifications. I can be reached at 1660 Lincolnshire Drive, or TO 8-2699. I would ap- preciate an answer. Sincerely yours, Julian Levant." . . . You showed your son's letter to Henry Keywell, Julian's grandfather, and also one of the owners of the Hen- rose, who asked if you were going to employ him . . . Your reply was, "I don't want him. You hire him!" . . . (Julian finally got the job — but through no help from you.)
