cial, not racial. The Jews of
Central and Eastern Europe are
an extremely mixed race; a sub-
stantial proportion of them are
supposed to be not of Semitic,
but of Caucasian (Khazar) or-
igin; and the Jews of Hungary,
Poland, Russia are not only in
appearance but also in the rela-
tive distribution of blood groups,
more closely related to their re-
spective host nations than to
each other. A gene transmitted
from ancient Canaan must by
now have become a rarity."
Koestler's controversial nature
undoubtedly accounts for many of
his views. For example, his equat-
ing Jews with Khazars happened
also to be an Arab anti-Israel ar-
gument. The trouble is—his delv-
ing into the question of the genes
ARTHUR KOESTLER
does not go far enough. How about
the Jews in Moslem countries who
look like Arabs, Jews in Ethiopia,
Jews in China who have begun to
look like Chinese. The true social
answers are not necessarily akin
to Koestler's.
His essays in their totality are
impressive and interesting. He is
always the great advocate of
higher ideal, as in the instance of
his battle against capital punish-
ment.
Koestler's "Drinkers of Infinity"
is certainly worth reading and
studying.

his essays written from 1955 to

A dialogue between Koestler and
George Urban — an essay under
the title " 'Darkness at Noon' and
'The Strangled Cry' "—could well
be rated the impressive pieces in
this book.
In his account of his return visit
to Hungary Koestler commented
on the predominance of Jews in in-
tellectual pursuits, stating:
"I shall not attempt to explain
how the Jews in Hungary (and
Austria) came to occupy this nu-
merically disproportionate posi-
