Meaning of Magen David
By DR. SAMUEL J. FOX
(Copyright 1970, JTA, Inc.
The Magen David (Shield of Da-
vid) is the name given to the fig-
ure of the six-pointed star which
has somehow become to be a sym-
bol of the Jewish people.
The origin and significance of
the Magen David is steeped in
mystery as an emblem for Jewish
people. It seems to have been docu-
mented for the first time in the
14th Century. Actually, we know
of isolated instances where this
symbol was used by the ancient
pagans and by Christians as well
as Moslems. Among the various
reasons given for its origin and
significance are the following:
some contend that it was a sym-
bol of the Jewish belief in the om-
nipresence of God. The six points
indicate the six extremities (north,
east, west, south, up and down).
Some claim that the interconnec-
tion or the two triangles is a dem-
onstration of opposition to the idea
of a duality of powers, stressing
instead the unity of God. Others
claim that the symbol was called
the Shield of David as a symbol
of our belief in the Messiah of
the family of David who would
some day come to bring salvation
to the universe.
In 189'7, at the first Zionist Con-
gress, David Wolfson chose the
design of the flag by associating it
with the traditional colors and
stripes of the Talis which were
white and blue. The white ex-
pressed the purity and the blue

Originally Herzl looked for a

denoting the seven hour working
day. Wolfson objected.

Chicagoans Seek to End
Symbols on Public Land
CHICAGO (JTA)—Two Chicago
alderman have introduced a reso-
lution in the city council to ban the
use of religious symbols on public
property. The resolution, sponsor-
ed by Leon M. Despres and Jack
Sperling, was referred to the com-
mittee on economic and cultural
development.
It asked the city to reaffirm "its
full support of religion" but "not to
give governmental support to any
particular religion" under the First
Amendment to the Constitution on
the separation of church and state.
The resolution referred to a recent
ruling by the Oregon Supreme
Court which banned the erection of
a cross on public property.
