The criticism of the press, TV
and radio was made in a lengthy-
study in the current issue of the
Columbia Journalism Review pub-
lished quarterly under the aus-
pices of the graduate school of
journalism at Columbia University.
The author is Fred Ferretti, a
member of the staff of the New
York Times, who was a WCBS-TV
correspondent during the strike
and covered it for his station.
The author charged that the
depth of black anti-Semitism was
greatly exaggerated, and accused
Albert Shanker, president of the
United Federation of Teachers, of
major responsibility for raising
and pressing the issue. He said the
strike originally began over the
decision to give communities con-
trol over their schools on an exper-
imental basis.
Ironically, he said, the report
was "bigger news" early this year
when some members of the
NYCLU protested it as political
and forced a debate on whether
it should have been issued.
According to the writer, the
media gave considerable promi-
nence to a report issued by the

cannot be 'none'. For the lessons

social cost of ignoring them is far

The newspapers and other
media, Ferretti asserted, made no
efforts to make Shanker define
the terms "extremists" and "vigi-
lantes" which, the writer said, he
used "at every opportunity." He
noted that when the New York
Civil Liberties Union issued an in-
vestigative report which, he said,
accused Shanker of having sys-
tematically tried to "sabotage"
the experimental school program,
"it received scant attention, ex-

Study Assails News Media for Making
Issue of Black Bias in School Strike
NEW YORK, (JTA) — New
York's news media are accused
of badly handling the issue of
black anti-Semitism raised during
the New York City teachers' strike
from Sept. 9 to Nov. 18 last year
and of failure to "hold the accus-
ers accountable for their words

To avow full solidarity with the State of Israel on its 22 birthday,
❑
To deepen Jewish National Fund sentiment among the masses of the Jewish people.
❑ To focus attention on more than 50 years of Jewish National Fund activities in Detroit in
building the land of Israel and strengthening its security with special emphasis on the new
challenges facing the JNF since the Six Day Wor.
❑ To meet the desperate needs of the beleagured young state, it has become imperative to
reclaim more land for outposts in the most vulnerable areas, in other words, to help estab-
lishments all along the border.
❑ To mobiize the broadest possible support for the JNF through the widest possible use of
all JNF's traditional collection methods.
1=1 To help in the development of a unified Jerusalem by accepting the Government's request
to plant the Jerusalem Park of the Heroes overlooking the Temple Mount, which will be a
memorial to the fallen heroes in the Six Day War.
❑ To inscribe your name, or the name of a relative or friend in the Honor Role of the Jewish
Peoplethe Golden Book, A new special volume of this treasure-house of Jewish history has
been opened in honor of the Reunification of Jerusalem.
❑ To place another thousand Blue-White JNF Boxes in Detroit and Michigan Jewish homes,
❑ To plant more trees in Israel. Israel needs more trees. Trees represent the rekindled
strength and lifeblood of the land. Trees conserve the soil. Trees beautify the land. Trees
reclaim the wasteland. Trees provide employment and absorb thousands of the state's
temporarily unemployed. And trees strengthen our ties with Israel.
❑ To remind Jews to remember JNF in their Wills, thus not only linking their names forever
with the land of Israel, but that their legacy will help ALL of Israel. JNF land supports the
whole Israel economy—it grows Israel's food—on it stand Israel's religious, educational and
welfare institutions.
We have before us a colossal task. Just os the JNF strengthened Israel's frontiers and
developed border settlements which carried o good share of the burden of the defense struggle,
so is the JNF called upon to strengthen existing positions and - to prepare a new wave of land
settlements so vital for the future of Israel.
