Rahamim Freed, 3 Arabs Sentenced

WINTERTHUR, Switzerland
—Three Arab commandos, one of
them a woman school teacher,
were sentenced by a Swiss court
Monday to 12 years at hard labor
for attacking an El Al airliner
and killing the Israeli pilot.
The El Al security guard, Mor-
dechai Rahamim, who was on trial
for killing a fourth terrorist, was
acquitted.
Court president Dr. Hans Gut an-1
nounced the verdict at the end of
a month-long trial of Rahamim and
the three Arabs—Mohammed Abu
El Heiga, 24; Tawfik Ibrahim Yous-
sef, 34; and Ahmina Dahbour, 22.
The three were credited with
307 days already served since the
machinegun attack on the El Al
jet at Zurich Airport Feb. 18
Rahamim 23, was found innocent
of killing Abden Mehsen under ex-
tenuating circumstances. The court
accepted his contention that he shot
the Arab in self-defense. Contend-
ing that Mehsen had thrown down
his gun before Rahamim shot him,
the prosecutor had demanded a
two-year term for Rahamim.
The three Arab defendants were
found guilty on six charges, includ-
ing premeditated killing, causing
grievous bodily harm and endager-
ing and disturbing public air traffic
and the lives of many persons.
The evidence showed Youssef
was the only one of the three who
actually fired at the plane with
his submachine gun. The other
gunman was Mehsen, while Heiga
and Miss Dahbour were supposed
to blow up the plane with explo-
sives after the passengers had been
removed. They were arrested be-
fore they could complete their
task.
Meanwhile three armed Arabs,
all alleged terrorists, were ar-
rested at Athens Airport Sun-
day as they were about to board
a TWA airliner which they ap-
parently intended to hijack, it
was reported here. The three
were seized after a TWA employe
found hand grenades in the lug-
gage of one of them.
The Arabs were identified as
Miss Abou Jhalil, 22, Issan Dou-
mit, 20, and Sami Abdoul 18. Police
said they were carrying forged
Lebanese passports. The three car-
ried tickets for Rome and Milan.
They were among 13 passengers
perparing to board TWA flight 841,
which originated in Tel Aviv and
was bound for New York via Rome.
The flight was delayed three hours
while police searched all luggage
and cargo aboard.

There was continued silence, how-

In a letter to the Defense Secre-
tary Melvin R. Laird, Rabbi Arthur
J. Lelyveld of Cleveland, AJC
president, urged reconsideration of
"a policy that plainly favors the
grape growers in their present ef-
fort to defeat unionization of their 1
employees."
Rabbi Lelyveld noted that the
Defense Department's 1969 pur-
chase of grapes was up nearly
4,000,000 pounds from its 1968
level. He said, "The practical re-
sult of increased Department of
Defense purchases is to shore up
the price of grapes and permit
many growers to stand firm, in
their refusal to negotiate with the
workers."
Meanwhile, the U.S. Depart-
ment of Commerce said it has
under "serious investigation and
consideration" a protest lodged
by the American Jewish Con-
gress against a federal grant of
$181,500 to enhance a project
sponsored by Gerald L. K. Smith,
a professional peddler of racial
hate propaganda since the early
1930s.
The grant is for roads leading to
the "Christ of the Ozarks" statue
and the "Passion Play" at Eureka
Springs, Ark., where Smith has his
