Rich British Jews, Ransom for Arabs

LONDON — A plot to kidnap
prominent British Jews, smuggle
them out of the country and ran-
som them for money to finance
Arab guerrilla raids against Israel
was uncovered by Scotland Yard,
according to police sources here.
The sources said a man arrested
after a series of police raids
around London had revealed de-
tails of the plot. Scotland Yard de-
clined to comment.
The list of 13 kidnap victims
was headed by Charles Clore,
chairman of Selfridge's depart-
ment store, and Lord Sieff, head
of Marks and Spencer store and
vice president of the World Jewish
Congress. Both have contributed
heavily to Israeli causes.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Wash-
ington's oldest synagogue has com-
pleted a two-day move on 28 bal-
loon tires to a new site and a new
role as a museum operated by the
Jewish Historical Society of Great-
er Washington.
The 93-year-old building was the
home of Washington's Adas Israel
Congregation when it opened its
doors in 1876. It has not been used
as a house of worship since 1908
but was retained by the congrega-
tion and recently declared an his-
tor'c landmark .
The Historical Society acquired
the building but it had to be moved

FRANK LEVAN ANNOUNCES

By BENNETT CERF

A

6-FOOT-6 restaurant patron left this note on his expen-
sive new hat: "This hat belongs to a champion heavy-
weight and I'm coming back in five _minutes." When he re-
turned the hat had van-
ished, and in its place was
this penciled explanation:
"Your hat was taken by
a champion distance run-
ner and I'm not coming
back at all. Thank you!"

his convertible."
At the Stock Exchange Luncheon Club: "I woke up this morn-

At the Burning Tree Clubhouse: "It's not that I really cheat at
