Belated Saturday
Maariv Services

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOR

(Copyright 1969, JTA , Inc.)

Evening services (Maariv ) are
delayed later than usual on Sat-
urday night.
It is a Jewish tradition to extend
the hours of the Sabbath both by
taking on the Sabbath earlier than
sunset on Friday and later than
sundown on Saturday night. The
practical reason for this is- to dem-
onstrate our love for the Sabbath
and desire to retain it as long as
possible. Just as one anticipates
the arrival of a favored guest and
tries to delay his departure, so do
we treat the Sabbath by anticipat-
ing its arrival and dalaying its
departure. Another reason for this
extension of time, is that if one
would wait until the last minute to
accept the Sabbath and take leave
of it, at the first possible minute,
one may very well erroneously
violate the Sabbath because of a
misjudgment in time. The extra
time taken on before its arrival
and after its departure is a means
of assurance against this possible
error. The rabbis of the mystic
tradition explain that if the expira-
tion of a Sabbath is postponed the
souls which are freed on the Sab-
bath from the fiery hell of Gehim-
mon will have a longer period of
relief.

A special blessing is made
over a candle on Saturday night.
A number of reasons are given
for this blessing, particularly on
Saturday night. One answer is that
since kindling a light on the Sab-
bath is prohibited, there has been
'an interruption in man's activity
in kindling the light. Therefore, he
makes a benediction the first time
a light is kindled after the inter-
ruption. A second reason is that
light was originally created on the
first day of creation and man pro-
nounces the blessing of light on
Saturday night as a thanks to God
for having created it. The third ex-
planation is that this emulates the
experience of Adam who after
having sinned on Friday found
himself' in darkness on Saturday
night for the first time until the
Almighty showed him how to rub
two stones together to create fire
and light. Man thus thanks the
Almighty for having shown his an-
cestors how to create light in the
darkness. Some claim that the
kindling of the light commemo-
rates the pillar of fire which the
Almighty sent to Adam on the first
Saturday night since he was fright-
ened lest the serpent might tempt
him again and he did not have the
protection of the Sabbath to watch
over him.

An "ayin hora" has often been
translated as an "evil eye". Some
people translate it as "the eye of
an evil (person)." The latter trans-
lation would indicate that the ex-
pression refers to the results and
the reaction of an evil person who
looks upon the good fortune and
wealth of others with envy.
Some of the mystic sources con-
tend that these reactions are harm-
ful to the individual who is the
object of this envy. Some go as
far as saying that harmful rays
are emitted. The Talmud (Ethics
of the Fathers) indicates that an
evil eye can sometimes "drive a
man from this world."
Some claim that this expression
is to be taken figuratively and that
what is meant by it is the fact
that "envy" has often been the
source of great trouble and disas-
ter as it often leads to such crimes
as "theft" and murder". "Ayin
hora" would simply be another
word for "envy."

How can you come to' know
yourself? Never by thinking: al-
ways by doing. Try to do our duty,
and you'll know right away what
you amount to. And what is your
duty? Whatever the day calls for.
—Goethe.
