BOSTON (JTA) — The Arab guerrilla movement is emerging as a political force in the Middle East with its power and prestige steadily growing, according to a report to the Christian Science Monitor from correspondent Peter Max S. Mellas in Beirut. The correspondent reported that the "feeling is prevalent that pros- pects for a neaceful settlement in the Middle East are fast diminish- ing. Commando spokesmen are ready to give assurances that theirs is only a liberating mission and not a political movement," Mellas reported. But, he added, "Sea- soned observers agree that the commando movement cannot en- tirely avoid political implications. These observers also point to the perils of the commando move- ment's developing into a leftist force in the Middle East." The correspondent noted that in the view of observers, as a revolu- tionary movement, "The comman- dos cannot avoid leftist influences. Add to this the assistance they have been receiving from Marxist nations, the observers say, and one has the picture in its full magni- ture, unless the West manages to change the tide."
