Victorian Stencils:
Attractive, Useful

An extensive field of design
which flourished during the Vic-
torian era was the use of vivid
stencil patterns to decorate the
ceilings, hallways, borders, and
corners of building interiors. The
patterns selected by Edmund V.
Gilion in "Victorian Stencils for
Design and Decoration" (Dover
paperback original) appeared in I
an extensive collection contained
in issues of the Deutsches Mater-
Journal, a magazine published in
Stuttgart circa 1888-1894. The
book's 133 different stencils include
numerous floral patterns.

Fascinating 'Malata Jue' Story in Marcus' New Work

In 1668 Boston reported the ar-
rival and arrest of a Jew named
Solomon. He was caught in the
town of Wenham, Mass., on his
way to New Hampshire and Maine.
His crime? He had profaned the
Lord's Day by traveling on a Sun-
day.
Who was Solomon? All we know
is that he was described as a
"malata Jue." But was he actually
a mulatto? The Englishmen of that
day thought of the Jews as a dark-
skinned people. In 1665, three years
before Solomon was hauled before
the magistrates in Wenham, a
respectable Portuguese Jew on
Jamaica, a landowner, was re-
ferred to as a "black Jew." It is
by no means improbable that the
term mulatto was occasionally ap-
plied to Spanish-Portuguese Jews,
especially by people who had never
seen a Jew before. The New Eng-
landers had come from old Eng-
land where, before 1655, no Jews
had been allowed to dwell for
nearly 400 years. Even after 1655,
there were only a handful, and
they were secluded in an obscure
corner of London.
As late as 1733 a verse in an
English drama ran as follows: -

Farewell, good Mr. Jew:
Note I hate your tawny face;
I'll hare no more to do
With any of your race.

II

he included in the category not
only Africans. Asians, and Ameri-
Can Indians, but also Italians.
French. Russians, Swedes and all
the Germans except the Saxons.
The Saxons and the English, he
wrote in 1751. are "the principal
body of white people on the face
of the earth."
Although Solomon of Massachu-
setts may well have been a white
man of Spanish-Portuguese origin,
this is not to imply that there were
no genuine mulattos among the
Jews of that generation. Jews in
the West Indies and in Dutch
Guiana fathered many mulatto
children who were reared in the
Jewish faith. No later than 1664
the London Jewish charities were
supporting a mulatto Jew and they
continued to provide for him until
his death four years later. Perhaps
by 1668 they had tired of maintain-
ing their mulatto client over a pe-
riod of years and found it cheaper
to ship him off to distant Massa-
chusetts. But, if so, he returned
almost immediately from inhospit-
able New England only to die and
to require burial by his coreligion-
ists. This is by no means improb-
able• for the "rabbi" of the London
Jewish community was a man
named Solomon Franco, who may -
well be identical with a Jew of the

director of the Archives, has a

whole chapter on Jews and Ne-
groes.

This inscription was found on a
stone buried in the roots of a tree
in Kensington, Minn. Its implica-
tions are staggering, and the Ken-
sington Stone, found in 1898, start-
ed a controversy that historians,
linguists and archaeologists have
not yet resolved. Is it genuine, the
unique record of a forgotten expe-
dition to America? Or is it one of
the most successful hoaxes in his-
tory?
In "Norse Discoveries and Ex-
plorations in America," a Dover
paperback, Hjalmar R. Holand
uses the Kensington Stone as a
starting point for a wide-reaching
study of early Norse explorations
and settlements in the No r t h
American continent. His approach
to this highly controversial subject
is thoroughly documented and very
persuasive.
