THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, December 5, 1969-49 Hanuka Books Among Featured Current Volumes for Children On the eve of Ilanuka, children's stores are beginning to multiply, and there is a vast variety of nar- ratives for the young—the very young and their elder ones. There are many such books now available for those seeking good o nes as gifts and those desiring to purchase them for their young- sters. as well as those approach- ing teen-agers. There is charm in the picture story by Marilyn Hirsh, "Where Is Yankela?", published by Crown. Yankela was believed lost and the mother became panicky, fearing he either fell into a well or was eaten by wolves. Then the problem was presented to the rabbi, he ad- vised that Yankela was where he was left and, sure enough, he was found in his home. The splendid pictures by the author help make it a book that will charm the very young reader. From Hawthorn Books comes a book about "making music." In "A Little Happy Music," Robert Winsor, in story and pictures, de- scribes the interest in music by youngsters, how Uncle Charles the musician utilizes Gramma's old piano for Kenny and Idella to create song and to make for a live- ly celebration in which young and old participate. • * A novel for young people that is especially meritorious and serves well as a Hanuka gift is the story based on the Maccabean theme written by Libby M. Klaper- man. Published by Funk and Wag- nails as a Sabra Book, under the title "The Five Brothers Macca- bee," this new novel is based on ancient records, on the Maccabean story as told in the Book of the Maccabees and is narrated in a style that will fascinate the teen- ager as well as those considerably younger. The splendor of this novel lies not only in the manner in which Hannka's founding heroes are delineated but in the portrayal of the heroes. The personality sketches of the Maccabees as de- scribed here are superb. Mrs. Klaperman lectures at Ye- shiva University's Stern College. With her husband, Rabbi Gilbert M. Klapennan, she has written a Jewish history for youth and she has authored a number of volumes, in addition to writing many mag- azine articles. "The Five Brothers Maccabee" was printed in Israel. • • • . In good children's books there are directions for par- ents on teaching the youngsters the ways of life, legends that ap- ply to conduct, means of gauging habits. A hook of fables, "The King and the Parrot," by Klaus Winter and lIelmut Bischoff, published by Knopf, is a case in point. This • text is of delightful stories, ex- cellently illustrated, has a series of stories, retold by the authors. from a number of sources, including Aesop, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Ivan Krvlov, and others. Frequently, an eminent writer will produce a children's book. Andre Maurois has authored such a volume and his "Fatty- puffs and Thinifers," illustrated by Fritz Wegner, first published in France, now printed here by Knof, is a splendid example of greatness rising to splendid heights to reach out to the young. The tale of two youngsters who in their imagination reach into the center of the earth on an escalator provides adventure, understanding of scientific terms, the reaching out of brave youths into spheres that entertain and ascertain informa- tive details that elevate young readers and insure a desire for knowledge. s * From Hawthorn Books comes a most interesting story for young Americans. Bernice Kohn has pro- duced a remarkable story about the Cherokee Indians and about the greatest of the Cherokee heroes. Entitled "Talking Leaves: The Story of Sequoyah," this is a story of a tribe and of a hero. It combines biography with his- tory and its noteworthy role is enhanced by the splendid illustra- tions by Valli. Children who love to read about Indians, who admire heroes, who wish to link themselves with a great tribe and its customs and its people, will love this story. And in the process of enjoying a great book—especially well pre- pared for young readers—they will learn history. Bernice Kohn, who is married to Dr. G. David Weinick, of Man- hattan and Long Island, has per- formed a magnificent task with this °Man grad God' hi _Biblical Theology Meads JVSU _Press' Newest _Publi•ations "Man and God," subtitled "Stu-1 dies in Biblical Theology," is a I major work just published by Wayne State University Press. Its author, Dr. Eliezer Berkovits, chairman of the department of Jewish philosophy at Ilebrew The ological College, Skokie, Ill., here outlines basic concepts and offers interpretations and comments that serve to enrich Jewish studies and knowledge of the Bible. A knowledge of God is empha- sized at the outset as means of approaching the basic issues, and the personal relationships between man and God are reviewed in numerous definitive analyses re- sulting from the author's drawing upon the witings of most noted scholars. Dr. Berkovits touches extensive- ly upon emunah—belief and faith —and a variety of subjects which enhance the work he has created. Especially significant is his study of s'dagah—usually spelled tzedaka — and the concept of charity and justice. In a spirit of confidence in the future and the justice of the ideas in sedeq and s'dagah by Iasaiah, Rabbi Berkovits writes: "The vision of salvation will not be confounded forever, the day of s'dagah is sure to dawn. Because God created sedeq; because crea- tion itself is an act of sedeq. The universe incorporates the principle of sedeq which is one with the principle of creation. Because God's sedeq is the cosmic princi- ple alive in the world, in the final reckoning it will bring forth the triumph of salvation and s'daqah on earth. The sadiq, who will reign as kind and prosper, who will create mishpat and s'daqah, in whose days Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely, may tarry; yet come he will. God, our sedeq, is the guarantor." Thus, while evaluating s'daqah Dr. Berkovits also has taken into account the role of the sadiq, the saibtly one, and the God of justice. In this fashion the entire work, dealing with "Man and God," offers a definitive study of the the- ology of the Bible. It is a most creative work that enriches the WSU bookshelf. • • • • The new WSU Press publications include an impressive study, "An- alysis of Poetic Thinking," by Dr. Max Rieser. It was translated from the German by Herbert M. Schuel- ler. Regarding himself as departing from the methods of Freudian and Jungian interpreters, Dr. Rieser holds the view that a specific form ensues from the regression in the mental structure of a poet result- ing from his deep personal and often passionate involvement with the poem's subject matter. • • • "John Sherman and Dhoya" by William Butler Yeats were last published in 1908. Julian May as author, John Hawkinson with his illustrations, combined their skills to inspire the very young reader, to introduce him to wildflowers and grasses in spring, to the ice-covered ground in winter. The young reader learns about the Indiana dunes along Lake with an introduction and a colla- Michigan. It is a story of wind and snow and waves and dunes— by an author who has seen and experienced what is described; by an illustrator who understands the phenomena under view.
