It is necessary to have a minyan
(a forum of 10 males) present for
the wedding ceremony.
The Talmud (Ketubot 7:B)
traces this requirement from the
Biblical account of the marriage
which took place between Ruth
and Boaz (Ruth 4:2). There the
Bible mentions that Boaz sum-
moned 10 men. Basically, the re-
quirement of 10 men indicates
that marriage is an occasion which
involves the community.
It was felt necessary to have
the community officially informed
of the fact that a marriage was
taking place by requiring a min-
yan to be present. This was one
way of making the marriage public
knowledge so that all would take
due notice and govern themselves
accordingly, respecting the newly-
weds as man and wife. It also
provided an opportunity for the
community to cheer the new coupie
which is a basic responsibility of
a community towards the new
bride and groom.

Dr. Seuss and Roy McKie are the
joint authors of an intriguing
book for children published by Ran-
dom House. The title and the ex-
planatory note provide the basic
details about this work. It is called
"My Book About Me" and the sug-
gestion is "You paste your picture
here. Then you write and draw
your book about yourself."
That's it: it's an exercise book
for youngsters to write about them-
selves. The entire text is geared to
that purpose and it is done mag-
i nificently in the usual Dr. Seuss
traditional style with McKie's help.
Much is introduced here — the
way of life for a youngster, habits,
actions, evaluating oneself. It is as
much an exercise book as it is a
work to make the child think and
act.

Musical Classics
Issued by Dover

The musician must consult the
original manuscript to reassure
himself. Dover Publications now
makes available in paperbacks ori-
ginal masterpieces of Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig wit
Beethoven, and Johann Sebastian
Bach for music lovers who want
to go to the original source.

! Three new volumes in Dover's
"Facsimile Series of Music Manu-
scripts" are Mozart's "Eine kleine
Nachtmusik. k. 525," Beethoven's
"Piano Sonata No. 32 in C Minor,
Op. 111" and Bach's "Two- and
Three-Part Inventions."

Each book in the series repro-
duces an autograph manuscript.
The standard published edition is
also reprinted so that the musician
can use these volumes for per-
formance, study, analysis, and
comparison. All three editions are
edited and introduced by Eric
Simon.
