Philly Aged Home Gives
Torah to Majorca Jewry

PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — A
Jewish home for the aged in Phila-
delphia has provided a Torah for
the tiny recently organized Jewish
community of Majorca. a Spanish
island in the Mediterranean off the
east coast of Spain. There are 300
.TeWs on the island, which is a
popular tourist resort.
According to Harry A. Robinson.
president of the Home for the
Jewish Aged. the presentation of
the Torah scroll helped revive
formal Jewish worship on th e
island for the first time in more
than 500 years.
Robinson was .instrumental in
securing the Torah for the island-
ers after he visited Majorca on a
holiday last summer. It was
shipped through • the intercession
of Sidney Jaffe, director of finance
of the Federation of Jewish Agen-
cies of Greater Philadelphia with
which the home for the aged is
affiliated.
Robinson said the Jewish com-
munity on Majorca is descended
from Marranos. Jews forcibly ,
converted to Christianity during
the inquisition in the 15th Cen-
tury. There are also some recent
Jewish immigrants.

Gerd Oswald is co-author, pro-
ducer and director of "80 Steps to
Jonah," made for Steve Broidy's
Motion Picture International, a
Warner Bros., release screened to
the Hollywood press this weekend.
The film is an honest tear-jerker,
dealing with a fugitive from the
pcilice. It provides an effective
vehicle for the screen debut of
popular young singer Wayne New-
ton, a favorite of the nightclub
circuit.

'80 Steps to Jonah" falls short
of being a great film, not because
it was made on a modest budget
but due to diversified visual ele-
ments that do not match. The idea
that Jonah-Newton finds refuge in
a camp for blind children, in itself
overly sentimental and
all-too-
simplified, has its conterpoint in
the efforts of a much-too-dopy po-
lice force. represented by Keenan
Wynn and Slim Pickens, who are
unable to apprehend the wanted
escapee though his face is dan-
gling before their eyes throughout
the whole picture.

Shelley Winters, who portrays a
prostitute in the Carol' Reed pic-
ture, '-Nobody Loves Flapping
Eagle," produced for Warner Bros.
by Jerry Adler (with Anthony
Quinn as her boyfriend), returns
to New York to begin rehearsals
for "Minnie's Boys," the Broad-
way musical about the Marx
Brothers, in which she goes "legit"
both ways assaying the role of
vaudevillian Minnie Marx, mother
of the boys.

Otto Schlesinger directs Alec
McGowan in the screen version of '
Peter Luke's play, "Hadrian VII,"
which Charles Kasher and Bill
Freedman are producing for Col-
umbia in London. Based on the
(almost autobiographical) novel by •
Frederick Rolfe. it is the story of
a rejected ecclesiastic student who
creates the fantasy of being the
first English Pope in modern his-
tory. Schlesinger, one of the
screen's most controversial direc
tors, is noted for "Billy Liar,"
"Darling," "Far From the Mad-
ding Crowd" and the current
smash hit of "Midnight Cowboy."

starring Gregory Peck on location
in Tennessee, will resume produc-
tion of "The Horsemen" in Madrid
next April. Several weeks of film-
ing with Omar Sharif took place
earlier this year in Afghanistan,
interrupted by the star's prior
commitment in "The Last Valley."
Robert Radnitz will be producer
for CBS's Cinema Center Films,
"The Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle,"
dramatization of Charles Darwin's
historical five-year cruise to the
South Seas. Andrew Sinclair is
writing the screen play. The pic-
ture goes before the cameras early
in 1970 and will be filmed on actual
locations.

Sidney J. Furie's "Little Fauss

tion with Robert Redford. Michael

authentic yarn about motorcycle
racing in the United States was
produced by Albert S. Ruddy.
