Post Office Warns:
Mail Early, Carefully

In the Detroit Post Office last
year, there were more than
100,000 greeting cards and 3,500
'gift parcels which, because of the
faulty addresses or poor packag-
ing, never made it to their intend-
ed recipients.
Postmaster Edward L. Baker re-
leased the figures in his annual
appeal to Detroiters to mail early
and to exercise care in the prepar-
ation of their holiday mail.
lie said over half of the unde-
liverable items had to be consign-
ed to the Dead Letter Office be-
cause they bore no return address
and, therefore, could not he return-
ed to their senders.
According to the postmaster,
the principal causes of non-de-
livery were illegible, inaccurate,
or incomplete addresses and in-
adequate packaging.
He said mailers should he par-
ticularly careful in addressing
mail to include both the city and
state, apartment number where
appropriate and the ZIP-Code
number, in both the return and
the destination addresses.
Baker said, "The ZIP-Code is
I especially important, because with
the ZIP number as a clue, in many
instances, we are able to accom-
plish delivery despite a discrep-
, ancy in another portion of the ad-
. dress."
