The medical service which the Histadrut provides for its members
through its medical insurance fund—known as Kupat Holim—plays a
tremendous role in the public health system in Israel. The Histadrut
maintains hospitals, clinics, health centers for all members and their
families. Its Nlish'an Welfare Fund maintains old-age homes and chil-
dren's institutions, and makes loans to needy families. The Histadrut
also assists elderly workers, in particular those outside regular pension
schemes.

HISTADRUT AGENCIES: The industrial agencies of the Histadrut
are not only helpful in the industrial development of Israel but also to
expanding employment. The biggest agency is the Solel Boneh. It com-
prises a building and public works company, with over 22,000 em-
ployees and a turnover of 562,000,000 Israeli pounds a year.
