FOX (Copyright 1969. JTA, Inc.) Usually, this is done to indicate that this blessing concludes the section of the liturgy which one is reciting. It also indicates that this particular blessing completes an action and has nothing to do with any action or blessing which may follow. Otherwise, the rabbis frown upon the individual who would recite the response "amen" after a blessing which he him- self made, since, in a normal cir- cumstance, the - amen" is intend- ed to be a- response which indi- cates agreement and concurring belief on the part of the listener. FOR PORTRAITS Noting God's Acts pronounced by Jews refer to the acts of God in the present tense. Actually, what appears to be the present tense is also the form of the "perfect" in Hebrew gram- mar. There are those, however, who say that the goodness of God is referred to in the present tense because it is only the limitation of human intellect which makes us classify time in terms of past, present, and future while all time is one unit in the eyes of the Almighty. As the Psalmist said "a thous- and years are like a day in thy sight." It also indicates, accord- ing to others, that the creative powers of the 'Almighty . are con- • stixt12.• functioning in our universe. The world, therefore, is always a dynamic living process and never actually a finished product. Thus, when we thank the Almighty for "creating the fruit of the earth" ; for example, we indicate that He is still lending his creative powers to the world through his agent, man.
