THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

THANKS TO TilE coaxial cable,
well over 50,000,000 television fans
saw every play in baseball's an-
nual classic, the World Series in
which those fantastic New York
Mets, Jerry Koosman, Art Sham-
sky, Al Weis and company, un-
believably beat the Baltimore
Orioles in five games. . . . In the
old days, the nearest a real fan
could get to a series game was a
seat behind a post in right field.
. . . The good seats were reserved
for politicians, movie stars and
Broadway big shots who might not
know a squeeze play from an um-
pire, but thought this was the place
to be when the newsreel cameras
started grinding.... In New York,
Ray Rubin noticed Rise Stevens,
the beautiful operatic songstress,
being thus discovered in a box seat
by a reporter who commented that
he didn't know she was a baseball
fan. . . "Indeed I am," enthused
Miss Stevens. "I wouldn't miss the
game for the world. By the way,
who is playing?"
ITS WONDERFUL to see close
buddies of over 30 years, James
Laker and Eli Springer still in-
separable. . . . These two real
swell guys are the kind of close
friends you read about but seldom
see!
WHO ARE YOUR picks for the
ten best dressed men in the Jewish
community?
THE HAPPINESS TIIAT will fill
the heart of 137-year-old Ben Shill.-
man Nov. 18, at Town and Country
Club. is heart-rending . . . Ben, a
resident at the Borman Home for
the Aged on W. Seven Mile Rd.,
will befeted at a testimonial dinner
in his honor by Knights of Pythias,
Detroit No. 55, of which he has
been a member more than 50
years . . . It's also the lodge's past
chancellors' night. and Ben is not
only the oldest living member, but
a past chancellor from away back
. Being a Spanish-American War
veteran, Ben will no doubt also be
honored at this affair by the Jew-
ish War Veterans, a group he like-
wise holds very dear to his heart.
MYRA RICIIARDSON HAS an-
other title tacked on to her likeable
personality. . . . The court clerk of
Oak Park, while in New Mexico at
the National Association for Court
Administration Conference, was
elected member of the national
board of directors.
LILLIAN AND DAVE ROSEN
haven't gone on a merry-go-round
for years.... Our sister Lil would
if Dave won't look. . . . The last
time she went on one years back,
Dave took sick just watching!
I CALLING GEORGE GREEN...
I Remember back in 1954 when, as
the- regular trombonist in Russ
Weaver's orchestra, you asked that
a substitute take your place for the
Duartian Dance at Edgewater
Park? . . . Your replacement died
in the tragic fire.-... And it wasn't
long before that you had come out
alive after being in an airplane
crash!
MISBEHAVING A BIT when
called to dinner last week, 7 -
y ea r-ol d Frances Stein was asked
by her mother Eleanor Stein, "Do
you know where bad little girls
go?" . . . "Certainly," she an-
swered. "They go almost every-
where."
ORGANIZATIONS TAKE NOTE
. . . If you want better attendance
at your affairs, take heed of the
community calendar of events by
the Jewish Community Council .
Check your date with them to
make sure no one else is using it.
