Rabbis Join 'With Clergymen to Help Women. Obtain Safe Abortions NEW YORK (JTA)—Rabbis are participating with Christian minis- ters in a program in eight Ameri- can cities which seeks to help women' with unwanted pregnancies get expert abortions barred to them by anti-abortion laws which • the clergymen consider archaic and cruel. The Clergy Consultation Service • on Abortion was organized in Nev.. York City by Rev. Howard Moody. Baptist spiritual leader of the Jud- son Memorial Church in Manhat- tan. The CCSA grew out of a meet- : ing more than two years ago of a number of activist-minded New York City clergymen, including some Reform and Conservative rabbis, who joined forces to liber- alize New York State's rigid anti- abortion law. The CCSA was created with two goals: to help women with prob- lems of unwanted pregnancy and 4o collect trustworthy information 'Tor use in a campaign initially to get the law liberalized and, sub- sequently, to seek its complete abolition. There is now a loose federa- tion of such services in New York City, Philadelphia, Cleve- land, New Jersey, Boston, De- troit, Ithaca, N.Y. and Los An- geles. Rev. Moody seeks crea- tion of the no-fee service in each of the 50 states. He told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that, relative to the proportions of Jewish and Christian women seeking such help, there is in- adequate representation of rab- bis in the units. t Generally, he reported, the per- centage of calls from Jewish and Christian women corresponds to the percentage of members of each faith in the population area served. Jewish women comprise about 30 per cent of the 5.000 women who have applied for help in New York since the-service was started. but currently only two of the 35 clergymen are rabbis, both 'Inns to Build 2 Hotels in Israel - THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS • New YORK ( TA — Holiday.'
