CHECKER BAR-B-4

WHEN MICHAEL ALLER was
married June 29, to Susan Winick.
good friend George Jesse! flew
here to be on hand for their mo-
mentous event . . . During the
Allied Jewish Campaign, with Mi-
chael as co-chairman of the nur-
sery and convalescent home divi-
sion, George was on a plane for
Detroit to attend the cocktail party
hosted by Michael who owns the
Sherwood Nursing Home in Royal
Oak . . . Now, as vice chairman
of the board of Metro Travel, Mi-
chael has George flying again .
This time it'll be on the kickoff
tour to Israel planned by Metro
. . . Michael and George have
known each other 16 years, and it
was through Jessel's urging that
Michael took up public speaking
. In 1959, while speaking for the
National Press Association, Mike
was labeled by then President
Dwight D. Eisenhower as Toast
master General Jr. of the United
States . • . This was reconfirmed
by Michael's dear friend John F.
Kennedy in a statement made af -
ter Michael introduced him as
president-elect at a governor's re-
ception . . . Lyndon B. Johnson
followed with his confirmation,
and, in all, Michael has spoken
about 40 times at official White
House functions.
YOUNG BOY DELIVERING pa-
pers in the Huntington Woods area
was asked his name by investment
broker Julius Cohen . . . He said
it was Jerry and added that the
last name was Lewis . . . Julius
remarked that he had a pretty
well-known name . . and the boy
replied, "It darn well ought to be!
I've been delivering papers in this
neighborhood for four years!"
BACK IN THE LATE 1930s and
early 40s at the Jewish
Center on Woodward, one of
the most popular groups was the
Maccabees Club . . . and now,
after all these years, it'll have its
first reunion, Oct. 19, at the home
of Frances and Henry Bogorad.
2842 Comfort Dr., in N. Bloom-
field . . . The fellows are all mar-
ried family men now and 30 are
expected to be here with their
wives . . . Arthur Hayet and wife
Doris are coming from New York
. . . Nate Landgarten and Helen
from Los Angeles . . . and Manny
Sulkes is cutting short a buying
trip to Germany to be here with
Jean . . Fran and Henry's phone
number is 851-3221.
DATE AND PLACE OF the past
chancellor's night and Ben Shill-
man testimonial dinner by Detroit
Lodge 55, Knights of Pythias, is
Nov. 18, at Town and Country Club
. . . The gali, shindig honoring
Past Chancelloren Shiffman and
the past heads of Detroit Lodge 55.
will not be restricted to K of P
members . . . it'll be open to all
gents in the community.
MR. CHARLES (Barack) has
taken a complete reversal! . . •
For 18 years, eight at Hudson': ,
and 10 in the northwest area, he
cut women's hair . . . This Mr.
Charles no longer does . • . he's
now in the wig business.
ERIC ROSENOW, local orches-
tra leader, had the pleasure of
recently celebrating the 91st birth-
day of his mother, Alma, who is
living with the Rosenows in Oak
Park . . Despite her age, the
mother is spry and alert . . . She
goes to parties, likes music, knits,
reads the Aufbau, German-Jewish
weekly published in New York, and
belongs to the Beth Hillel Sister-
hood . . Mrs. Rosenow was a
beautician in Germany.
