worked and studied at Kibutz Ra-
mat Hasharon. Jones' testimony
was apparently intended to bolster
the case by Tunik that Rohan was
mentally ill when he set fire to
the shrine and was therefore un-
punishable under Israeli law.
Jones said that the description
"weird or crazy" was applied to
Rohan by fellow students at Ramat
Hasharon. He said the Australian
admitted to him that he had once
been confined to a mental institu-
tion. Jones described. Rohan as a
person who had a "miserable. un-
happy - childhood, and "all his life
lie was rejected."
Jones testified that Rolian told
him on the evening of Aug. 21 that
he had burned the mosque to make
way for the rebuilding of the tem-
ple because God had so ordered
him. He said that Bohan claimed
to have spent over S1.000 in tips
and bribes to Moslem guards at
the mosque so that they would let
him conic and go as he pleased.
Ile said he gave one guard, 18-
year-old Nlunir Kazaz, about $450
for guiding him around the Temple
Mount area and for his interpreta-
tion of several passages from the
bible. Kazaz took the stand Wed-
nesday.
The Church of God, to which
Rohan reportedly belongs, is
one of many Pentecostal sects
which are basically fundamental-
ist. They _believe in the literal ful-
filment of biblical prophecies, par-
ticularly the return of Israel to its
homeland and the. rebuilding of the
, Temple as a pre-condition for the
coming of the Messiah. The Church
of God is a small sect with only a
few branches outside the U.S.

CJCongress Disturbed
by French Use Study
TORONTO (JTA) — The Cana-
dian Jewish Congress warned that
the popular movement to promote
wide usage of the French language
in the province of Quebec must
not be permitted to categorize
citizens as "majority'' and "minor-
ity" elements or to interfere with
"the option of all parents to send
their children to schools of their
choice."
The warning was contained in a
brief submitted by the CJCongress
to the Gendron Commission—the
Commission of Inquiry on the
Position of the French Language
and on Language Rights in Que-
bec.
The brief said that the C.1•Con-
. gress viewed "with grave concern"
the stated objective of the com-
mission to find the best means "to
exercise the linguistic rights of the
majority with full respect for the
rights of the minority."
According to the brief, "this
statement suggests that the in-
habitants of Quebec are . . . to be
divided into two groups, a major-
, ity and minority groups, creating
a division which ought not to
exist in a democratic viable so-
ciety."
The brief was signed by Nathan
Gaisin, chairman of- the CJCon•
gress' Quebec region; Morton
Bessner, chairman of the lin-
guistics committee; and Dr. ,
Samuel Lewin, eastern region
executive director. Bessner head-
ed a CJCongress delegation that
appeared before the commis-
sion.
The brief asserted that "what-
ever can be done to assist immi-
grants upon arrival to obtain
knowledge of the French language
is certainly most laudable and
useful. - But it took exception to
proposed measures that would
have settlers' children taught in
schools recognized as being French
language schools. The CJCongress
noted that "The Jewish commun-
ity, within the limitations of its
resources, has for a number of
years made facilities available to
Jewish immigrants to learn
French."
There are several ways in which
to apportion the family income, all
of them unsatisfactory. — Robert
