CHECKER BAR -B-fl

BIG INNOVATIONS IN travel
are being activated by very ambi-
tious all-out workings already
under way with barrister Fred
Gordon, chairman of the hoard of
Metro Travel, whose offices on W.
Grand Blvd. will soon expand to
the cities of Warren and South-
field . . . Community-ites on the
board with Fred are J. Stewart
(Jack) Linden, Michael Aller, Dr.
Alvin Shapiro, Don Ross, Harold
Smith and Austin Kanter .
Others are'Jerry Hutchinson, Ted
Marecki, Don Bemis and Stan
Kaczmarek, owner of The Moon
Supper Club.

THE LITTLE SAPLING Libby
Dussault planted several years ago
in Israel through the Jewish Na-
tional Fund for friend Mary Kre-
ger of the Broadway Market, has
grown into a cluster of 50 trees .. .
Mary's continuous contributions
have made her tree garden grow
and grow.

CHARLIE GROSSMAN watched
two cute little girls playing in
front of the house a few doors
away in Southfield . . . He men-
tioned about their cuteness to
neighbor Celia Abramson, and her
young son Jerry, remarked, "Their
father is a doctor. He keeps the
best ones for himself."

AL DE NAPOLI, owner of Luigi's
Pizzeria downtown, doesn't restrict
himself to running a restaurant
. . . not when the smell of oil and
liniment comes his way . . Al is
a former trainer of boxing great
Jake LaMotta, and gets back- in
the squared circle by taking the
training corner for Arnie Brower,
Jewish light heavyweight who 1
takes on Billy Tiger in the main I
event, Sept. 29, at the State Fair- 1
grounds . . . Its being promoted by
the New Directors Boxing Club
trying to revive the fight game in
Detroit . . . Arnie hails from Dart-
ford, Conn. and numbers among
the few Jewish fisticuff artists
around.

BARRY KAPLAN, 23-year-old
son of Sarah and Percy Kaplan.
executive director of the local Jew-
ish National Fund, has his photog-
raphy featured through 10 color
pages of Status Magazine . . -
with fur fashions for women rang-
ing from "plain" black mink to
pink chinchilla . . . The men are
shown wearing their furs also . .
Barry lives in New York and is a .
free-lance photographer . . one
who had to be the best for the
assignment since the designers
whose works are shown in Status
number among the nation's very
finest.

SIGHT-SEEING DEPT. . . .
Mayor Norm Feder giving cita-
tions at the Southfield Council
meeting and exclaiming. "I'm sur-
rounded by heavyweights!". . . to
which Councilwoman Jean McDon-
nel gave him a half-smiling wrin-
kle.

CALLING ROSE GURWIN . .
Remember back in 1948 when you
experienced the biggest thrill of
your life by shaking hands with
President Harry Truman on his
Labor Day visit to Detroit? . . .
You were on the reception commit-
tee that met the president at Union
Depot . . . When the presidential
train arrived at the station, you
went with Cy Bevan, national com-
mitteeman of the year before . . .
As the president shook your hand
in greeting, he said, "Say, my
daughter has a dress just like

that."
