Parents DO Have the Right to Insist

Children Mat -y Jewish, Writer Says

Editor, The Jewish News:
As a relatively young Jewish
mother of two teen-age daughters
and an 11-year-old son, I feel com-
pelled to reply to Linda Forst's
letter which appeared in the Aug.

ents who insist that their children

family because they have been
"worked in" along with the
establishment of all values that
guide us, not by dogmatic par-
butt
ental statements, but by bits and
pieces of discussions that have
spanned the years since my first
daughter was born 17 years ago.
At this point of my letter, it
would seem fitting to expound upon
the contribution which our very
"Jewish home" has made to en-
courage our children to heed our
wishes that they marry within our
religion, that they maintain life-
long devotion to Judaism.
Unfortunately, it is only since
our first daughter began Sunday
school that we have lighted Sab-
bath candles, at her insistence, and
that is the one obvious symbol of
Judaism in our home, other than
the Hanukah menora.
As one who was brought up in

tion that it is frequently difficult to
ascertain the true differences be-
' tween the Jews of America and
our non-Jewish counterparts. Cir
cumstances and affluence have
eased us out of the ghettos. Gen-
erally speaking, all institutional
religions are fighting for life.
In the face of this, we who are
today's parents—we who are the
uninformed, the inadequate, the
ill-equipped—ask that our children
perpetuate the ideals of our Jewish
heritage by "marrying Jewish"
and maintaining Jewish homes. Do
we have the right? We do!
Perhaps my children will marry

man of the institute's board of
governors since its founding, is
chairman of the sponsoring com-
mittee. The president of Israel.
Zalman Shazar, is honorary chair-
man. Israel Prime Minister Golda
Meir is honorary co-chairman.

I have honestly admitted our re-
ligious shortcomings, explained
them without unduly justifying
them, requested our children's pa-
tience and assistance in making
our home more Jewish. Even
though I must still ask which veg-
etables are forbidden on Passover,
and even though we conduct our
seder at a table set with our only
set of dinnerware, my children
treat my efforts with respect and
understanding. With all my awk-
wardness, they know I am trying.
It is significant to mention that
my children have seen their father
serve on the synagogue board of
directors for many years, their
mother participated as a sister-
hood member and writer for the
synagogue bulletin. It is equally
significant that each daughter has
observed her Bat Mitzva, that
their brother's Bar Mitzva will
occur in two years and that all
three children have received reli-
gious education since the age of 5.
And in all of this, despite what is
lacking, lies the answer which
Miss Forst is seeking.
You see, Miss Forst, in our own
way, all the parents who are of my
time are practicing a special kind
of illiterate but vital Judaism in
providing the opportunity for our
children to learn what we did not,
to do what we cannot.
If a child fails to grasp the full
impact of what we are trying to
"teach diligently unto our chil-
dren"—that we merely want our
children to be enriched where we
were deprived—then it is no won-
der that such a child would be so
shallow of character and mind as
to ask, "Why marry Jewish?"
If he has not learned enough
about the past to understand what
makes things as they are in the
present, then there will surely be
more than one question concerning
the future which he will not com-
prehend.
Sincerely,
AUDREY GERSON, 1
