Sukkot Q utz

Why is the practice of dwelling
in the sukka observed in the fall
instead of in the spring when the
people actually left Egypt to
begin their trek through the
wilderness?

A number of reasons are given
for dating the festival of Sukkot in
the fall. First of all, it is claimed
that the observance takes place in
the fall so that it will become ap-
parent that the people dwell in the
sukka to observe a commandment
of the Almighty. Were it to be in
the spring it might be considered
just another summer house as is
the custom in many places. A sec-
ond reason is that the holiday is
dei silned to take place after Yom
,Nippur. Living in the sukka indi-
cites that we have no fear of the
elements since we feel confident
that the Almighty has forgiven us
on the Day of Atonement and we
can, therefore, safely leave our
homes without undue concern.
Some claim that the practice of
living in the sukka takes place in
the fall because this is the time of
the gerat fall harvest when the

JERUSALEM (JTA)—A new con-
flict has erupted between the Is-
raeli government and the Jewish
Agency over the functions of each
in the sphere of immigration.
The agency executive has unani-
mously rejected a reported pro-
posal by Deputy Premier Yigal
Alton to transfer most of the
agency's immigration activities to
the ministry for immigrant absorp-
tion which Alton heads.
The ministry was established in
1968 by the late Premier Levi Esh-
kol. At the time, it ry as decided
that the Jewish. Agnecy would re-
tain responsibility for immigration.
but that the absorption of new-
comers would be handled jointly
by the agency and the new minis-
try.
Alton said in an interview pub-
lished in the newspaper Haaretz
recently, that if he is ask*d I>, re-

reaping of the crops can mislead
man into a feeling of false pride
and haughtiness over his newly ac-
quired possessions. He, therefore,
leaves the comfort of his home and
strives to reach out for the intangi-
bles in life showing that he does
not depend upon the wealth of his -
home and its possessions. It is also
claimed that the festival of Sukka
is observed in the fall because of
the fact that it was a Jewish ten-
dency to simulate the effects of a
bad sentence on Yom Kippur so
that its real effect will never come.
Thus, claim the Rabbis, if on the
Day of Atonement we were judged
to be punished by having to leave
our homes and be in exile, we do
so on Sukkot hoping that this will
be the only exile we have to suffer
during the year.

What is the reason for using
the four species on the Sukkot
holiday (the citron, the palm
branch, the myrtle, and the wil-
low)?

Basically, this is done in observ-
ance of a commandment in the
Bible (Leviticus 23:40). Some
claim that they were commanded
to do this as a symbolic deterent
against an inclination of false
pride. The palm branch symbolizes
the straight spine warning man not
to bow to temptation. The citron
symbolizes the pure heart warning
man not to lose himself with false .
emotion. The myrtle symbolizes
the good eyes warning man not to
be tempted by anything he sees.
The willow symbolizes the lips ad-
advising man to guard his speech.
These organs are especially sym-
bolized during the happiest of fes-
tivals to warn man against losing
his perspective in the face of a
happy occasion. Others see in the
four species a symbol of different
kinds of people. The citron, which
has both fragrance and taste sym-
bolizes the man of both learning
and wealth. The palm branch
which carries a fruit which has
taste but no fragrance symbolizes
the man of wealth with no learn-1
ing. The myrtle which has frag-
rance but no taste, symbolizes the
man of learning with no wealth.
The willow which has neither frag-
rance nor taste symbolizes the
man who has neither learning nor
wealth. The rabbis stress the fact
that four of these must be taken
together because every one in So-
ciety. no matter how much learn- .
ing he may or not have, or no mat-
ter how much wealth he may have
or not have. has a special contri-
bution to make which is important,
and often indispensable to society. i
