Most Canadians Neutral On Mid East Conflict TORONTO (JTA) — Most Can- adians are indifferent or neutral in the Arab-Israeli Middle East conflict according to the results of a national poll released by the Canadian Institute of Public Opin- ion (Gallup poll). The poll showed, however, that 26 per cent of Canadians sided with Israel and 9 per cent with the Arabs. In a similar poll taken in 1958, 14 per cent sided with Israel and 5 per cent with the Arabs. But 65 per cent of Canadians polled now indicated no preference for either side, compared to 81 per cent 11 years ago. The chief reason given by Cana- dians for siding with Israel was that the Jews "have been kicked around for years, persecuted and threatened with extinction." The main motivation of Arab sympathizers was that Israel was created out of an Arab country and it was only natural that the Arabs should fight back. Broken down by ethnic groups, 32 per cent of English-speaking Canadians are pro-Israel compared to 17 per cent of French Cana- dians. Most of the indifferent group claimed they were ''not interested' and did not follow the subject. Others said both sides were at fault and neither was trying to settle the dispute, while some maintained that Canadians should Pro Israelis cited "warm feel- ings" toward Jews and admiration for the way the Israelis have de- veloped their homeland. Pro- Arabs said Jews were "too ag- gressive" and "take advantage." LOFT (Copyright 1969, JTA, HOLLYWOOD—Stanley Kramer announces two new pictures to bo produced by him under his new pact with Columbia Studios. The first one to go is "R.P.M.', " (aster- isk is part of the title), a story of campus turmoil starring Anthony Quinn. After nine months of re- search, Rod Sterling is on the final draft of the screenplay. “R.P.M.'" goes before the cameras in No- vember and will find Quinn in the serious contemporary role of a col- lege dean beset by student unrest. The asterisk in "R.P.M..", ac cording to Kramer, calls attention to the fact that the letters mean. "revolutions per minute." Kramer's second production is a musical remake of his "Cyrano de Bergerac," from the romantic French classic by Leo Rostand. The original screenplay for the 1951 version was written by Carl Foreman with Jose Ferrer playing the title role and Mala Powers in the female lead under Michael Gordon's direction. The new mu- sical adaptation is being scripted by Erich Segal, with Johnny Mer- cer as lyricist and Oscar-winner Michel Legrand as the composer. "Cyrano" commences photography early next year, as Kramer says, at the other end of the entertainment spectrum from "R.P.M.'," strictly light-hearted romance with songs and dances. Producer-director Kramer still has a big one, made in Italy, in 1968 for United. Artists release for distribution. It is the World War II epic, "The Secret of Santa Vit- toria," a humorous account deal- ing with a group of American sol- diers headed by Anthony Quinn, with Buddy Hackett on the side- line, and Anna Magnani represent- ing Italian womanhood. *. s * Tony Curtis has begun filming in Istanbul, Turkey, "The Dubious Patriots," an adventure thriller based on an original screenplay by Leo Gordon, for producer Gene Corman, with Michele Mercier and Charles Bronson co-starring under Peter Collinson's direction. Set in the Ottoman empire during the period immediately following World War I, Curtis and Bronson are seen as two American expa- triates who join forces in an at- tempt to make their fortune. Fol lowing five weeks on locations in and around Istnbul, the Columbia Pictures Company will move to Goreme, a town in central Turkey where early Christians carved churches, monasteries and shrines from the surrounding mountains some 1,500 years ago. Final loca- tions will be filmed on Turkey's West coast in stich fabled spots as Efeses, Kusasdasi and in the port of Izmir. r * Edward G. Robinson, Jr., (the young actor-son of a famous fa- ther) with whom I worked on the motion picture "Tank Batallion" around 1958, has been signed for a featured role in the Hal Wallis production "Norwood" to be re- leased by Paramount Studios. Rob- inson was cast in the role by Jack Haley, Jr., who directs the comedy and who was a schoolmate of Rob- inson's at Hawthorne School in Beverly Hills. He's given him the role of China Bates, a U.S. Navy sailor who tries to romance Kim Darby who stars in the picture with Glen Campbell. Paul Nathan is associate producer. Elaine May discouraged camera bugs on a New York location for Paramount's "A New Leaf' who kept intruding on a scene with Walter Matthau. Miss May, who also directs the .comedy, asked the overzealous fang whether they had a "black and white" camera or color." If someone replied, black and white, Elaine would answer deadpanned, "It won't work on this picture, this filth is in color." * * * Howard W. Koch will produce the motion picture version of Neil Simon's smash Broadway hit play, "Plaza Suite" for Paramount Pic- tures, as was announced by Robert Evans. In the screen edition each sketch will have two different top stars enacting the roles unlike the stage version *here two actors portrayed the parts in all three playlets. "Plaza Suite" marks a reunion for Koch and Simon, as Koch produced Simon's highly suc- cessful, "The Odd Couple," one of the top-grossing films in all of Paramount's history. 4 Director John Fran'kenheimer, Producer Harold Cohen, and Exec- utive Edward Lewis are scheduled to go to Tennessee for the filming of "An Exile," based on the novel by Madison Jones with a screen- play by Alvin Sargent, with Gre- gory Pemk in the central role.
