2 Decades of Progress
JERUSALEM—Zvi Rivlin, first
director of an ORT school in
Israel, has retired ,from his post
after nearly 20 yeals of service.
Born in the Ukraine in 1902 and
educated in Kiev, Itivlin received
an engineer's degree from the
Technical University' there in 1925.
Although he was not brought up
as a Zionist, he studied Hebrew
and, upon graduating, made his
way clandestinely to Palestine.
The decisive day, in Rivlin's ca-
reer came in 1948: it was the day
on which a meeting with the late
Dr. Aaron Syngalowski (then,
chairman of the executive board'
of World GET Union) led to Riv-
lin's appointment as director of
the first ORT school in Israel.
• No ugly duckling could have had
a ruder start than that school. It
was set up in a group of bombed-
out buildings in an alleyway of
old Jaffa. The street itself served
as a school yard. Much of the
school's equipment was salvaged
from disbanded ORT training cen-
ters in European DP camps. Its
curriculum consisted of short vo-
cational courses, mainly for dis-
charged soldiers, and a sewing
course conducted in cooperation
with the kibutzim and geared to
their basic clothing requirements.
It was immediately clear to
Rivlin that the economy of the
new, state would not be well
served by such limited vocation-
al training. Within a year, the
World ORT Union accepted this
view, and the school in old Jaffa
was enabled to expand its cur-
riculum to include four-year vo-
cational courses, combined with
general education in electricity,
radio and plumbing.
Despite the school's primitive
'quarters, its reputation for high-
level vocational training spread.
From the day in September 1958
when it moved into the new prem-
ises near Lydda known as Yad
Syngalowski, the school's reputa-
Directing Yad Syngalowski was,
in a way, a far cyz from directing
the old Jaffa school, when Rivlin
exhorted his teachers and students
to "make the plaCe run on three
wheels, fi necessary!" and com-
mended their ingenuity when they
brought in scrap-iron scrounged
from among the rubble for use in
the workshops.
Father's Warning
(From the proverbs)
Hear, my 6on, your father's in-
,
And reject not your mother's teach-
ing:
For a graceful garland will they be
for your head.
And a chain for your neck.
My son, if sinners entice you, con-
sent not
If they say. "Come with us, let us
lie in wait for the honest.
Let us wantonly ambush the inno-
cent:-
Let us swallow f:p those who go
down to the '?it!
All kinds of precioi:3 wealth shall
we find.
We shall fill our houses with spoil;
Cast in your lot with us,
We will all have one purse"—
Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
And all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who
grasp her,
And happy is every one who holds
her fast.
The LORD by wisdom founded the
earth,
By reason he established the
heavens;
By his knowledge the depths are
broken up,
And the clouds drop down dew.
My son, keep guard on wisdom and
discretion,
Let them not slip from your sight
They will be life to you,
And an ornament round your neck.
Then you may go your way in
security,
Without striking your foot on a

NEW YORK (JTA)—The Na-
tional Association for the Ad-
vancement of Colored People said
that its opposition to the appoint-
ment of Federal Judge Clement
F. Haynsworth Jr. to the U.S. Su-
preme Court was based in part
on President's Nixon's apparent
break with the tradition of naming
at least one American Jew to the
highest court in the land.
The NAACP board of directors
said in a resolution released here
that it objected to Judge Hayns-
worth not only on the basis of his
"lamentable record in civil rights
matters" and his generally anti-
- labor rulings in the past.
In addition to those considera-
tions is the "refusal of the Presi-
dent of the United States to follow
the tradition of his eminent prede-
cessors, beginning with the late
Woodrow Wilson, of recognizing
the vast political and social contri-
butions. partieplarly with respect
to our legal institutions, made by
Jewish Americans," the NAACP
said.

and contributions to the legal
and political structure of the
United States over the past half
century," the resolution contin-

"It was a sad blow to the aspir-

participation of all of our people
in the affairs of government when
the President of the United States
failed to appoint a Jewish Ameri-
can as he filled not only one but
two vacancies in the last three
months," the NAACP said. "We
fear, or at least we suspect, that
this cavalier treatment of a group
of persons who have been in the
forefront of the fight for protec-
tion of the rights of all Americans
is thought to be justified because,
after too long a denial, a Negro
I American has been appointed to
the Supreme Court of the United
States. If this be the -political reas-
oning, we refuse to accept it. We
refuse to permit such cynical poli-
tics to require us to compete with
our fellow defenders of the rights
of all people for a place on the Su-
preme Court of the United States."
