Construction to Begin
on BB Housing for Seniors

WILKES BARRE. Pa. (.1TA) —
Construction will begin here this
fall on the first apartment complex
in a Bnai Brith-sponsored program
to erect nonprofit, nonsectarian
housing for elderly persons on
limited incomes. The 139-unit, 10-
story high-rise is scheduled for
completion in 1970.
The housing program, coordinat-
ed by Bnai Brith's Senior Citizen
Housieg Committee, is designed to
assist those 62 or older whose mod-
est income—too low to meet !to-
day's cost of private rentals—is too
high to make them eligible for
public housing.
The $2,000,000 development here
is to be erected in an urban renew-
al area of the city with the assist-
ance of federal and state mortgage
loans.

Loan applications for eight
similar Bnai Brith projects had
been held up because of a freeze
on federal mortgage funds. But
Abe Cramer of Pottsville, Pa.,

hous-
ing committee, said there were
congressional assurances that a

chairman of the Bnai Brith

section of the 1968 Housing Act

which subsidizes all but I per
cent of the interest charges on
FHA mortgages covering rental
for low income families, also will
be earmarked for housing for the
elderly.
