has assured UN Secretary General

Tamir began his military career
as• a youth, when he joined the
Hagana, underground Jewish de-
fense organization established dur-
ing the British Mandate.
In 1945, he was arrested and im-
prisoned by the British authorities
for participating in Hagana activi-
ties. After two years in prison, he
escaped and rejoined Hagana,
which had been merged with the
Israel Defense Forces, at about
the time the state of Israel de-
clared its- nationhood.

CBS Demands Return
of Correspondent's
Credentials by Israel

NEW YORK (JTA)—The presi-
dent of the Columbia Broadcasting,
System demanded the immediate
restoration by Israel of the ac-
creditation of its Jerusalem corres-
pondent, Antsony Hatch.
His credentials were withdrawn
by the Israel government press of-
fice for an alleged "most serious
contravention of censorship" and
breach of military security in con-
nection with his reports of Is-
rael's 10-hour raid on Egyptian
positions on the Gulf of Suez.

CBS-head Richard Salent said
in a telegram to Israel Informa-
tion Minister Israel Galili that
the correspondent's credentials
must be restored "in the interest
of world wide freedom of infor-
mation." He added that details
of the Israeli raid were "gener-
al information" in Israel at the
