Mental Instability Issue in Rubens Novel

Bernice Rubens, the London
(England) novelist, is a skillful
story teller. She has a good under-
standing of Jewish backgrounds
and in her treatment of Jewish
characters in her new novel,
- Chosen
People," - has undertaken
to probe into Jewish ways of life.
Yet the reviewer must ask why
the title "Chosen People" for this
Atheneum-published novel. T h e
problem-son Norman Zweck in this
story does introduce it with his i

prayer towards the end of the
book. In the home for the dement-
ed, after losing his father who suf-
fered over him so much, having
lost a close friend in the institu-
tion who provided him with an
addict's pills. Norman prays: "Dear
God." (And the novelits inserted
here the comment: It was a word,
after all, that covered everybody)
"Dear God, Loh after us cold and
chosen ones."
This does not prove the title to

be correct and the implication so
convincing. Some magazines have
gone overboard to acclaim this
work. Suddenly it becomes a ,low-
ish novel. Suddenly even the New
Ydrk Times reviewer likens Nor-
man's mother to Portnoy's mother
in the widely acclaimed pornogra-
phic Roth novel.

Actually, "Chosen People" is a
