They are descriptive of a great
hero, of a man of supreme courage
who was assigned to espionage in
Damascus and who performed his
task brilliantly — until he was
caught and hanged publicly.
This story is related in an im-
pressive work by Eli Ben-Hanan,
published by Crown.
Its significance lies in its ex-
pose of the manner in which the
Syrians were duped, the incom-
petence of the people among
whom Elie Cohn worked, the

Many Jewish teen-agers who
might be in need of expert coun-
seling on their problems "wouldn't
come to us" out of mistrust for
the Jewish establishment, "so we
went to them," the Allied Jewish
Community Services of Montreal
has disclosed.
In a recent "outreach" effort,
staff members of the Montreal
YM-YWCA sought the youngsters
out "in the shopping centers, the
corner hangouts, the hamburger
joints, and when necessary, the
bars."
Emanuel Weiner, assistant exec-
utive director of the AJCS, said the
younger generation was troubled by
"the pressures around us," includ-
ing "Quebec separatism, the Mid-
dle East, Vietnam, the manufac-
ture of napalm, university confron-
tations and so on." He said that
the teen-agers also are concerned
with matters closer to home such
as identification with the commun-
ity, use of drugs, sex and career
choices.
We knew these young people
would talk about their problems if
they were given the chance, the
right people to talk to, a place to
meet and if we could get to them,"
he added. "But they wouldn't come
to us so we went to them. We ap-
proached them on their own ter-
ritory and when we gained their
confidence, they started to come to
us."
He reported that when the teen-
agers did discuss their problems
with the Y workers, the latter
realized that specialists often
were needed to handle requests
for information and help.
A meeting of appropriate AJCS
agencies was convened to help
make available at the Y, where
the youngsters were beginning to
gather, such experts as psychia-
trists, job counselors, group work-
ers and medical personnel. The
agencies agreed to provide staff
members for specified day and
evening periods. Weiner said the
professionals are now available as
needed or can be reached for an
apointment almost immediately.
The experience of the project
to date indicates that if a teen-
ager is comfortable with such
adults and if he knows he can
speak freely without being ridiculed
or "squealed on," he will "open
up," and give both himself and the
professional a chance to get at the
root of his problems, Weiner re-
ported.
