Iraqi Jews Alone and Terrified

NEW YORK — A report on the
condition of Iraqi Jews has reach-
ed the office here of the World
Jewish Congress. The information
tells of the near complete social
Isolation of the Iraqi Jews.
"Since last November," the re-
port says, ."they have been for-
bidden to leave town, or to change
their residence without special
permission from the police. With
few exceptions they are unable to
work. They have no friends and
feel much bitterness against them.
"Even when in financial difficul-
ties, they are afraid to get money
to live on by selling some of their
furniture for fear of being charg-
ed with attempting to leave the
country. All telephones in the

government when in May it was
announced that regulations re-
stricting the issuance of pass-
ports to Jews would be rescind-
ed. However, in practice the
restriction still stands. Over
1,500 Jews have since applied for
passports, but so far only one
old woman has been granted a
permit.
"On June 12, the Official Gov-
ernment Gazette stated that two
laws which concerned the freezing
of Jewish property would be
abolished. Here, too, the laws are
still on the books, in practice.
"Iraqi Jews do not believe that
the discriminatory measures will
be removed, for approximately 50
Jews arrested in March are pre-
sently being detained in unspeak-
able conditions without even know-
ing the charges against them.
(Ninety Jews had been arrested
after the Six-Day War. Some of
these were released in September
1967; the rest in February 1969.)
"Since June 1967, close to 97 per
cent of all Jewish employes have
been fired from their jobs at gov-
ernment "suggestion." Only Jew-
ish doctors, teachers in Jewish
schools, small shop owners and a
small number of employes are still
allowed to work. An estimated 60
per cent of the Jewish population
has lost its livelihood.
"In spite of their excellent
scholastic records, Jews have not
been accepted—save one girl—in
Iraqi universities since June 1967.
Jews have been expelled from all
clubs. Jewish institutions and so-
cieties have been closed. The gov-
ernment has refused to accept any
relief consignment for the needy
Jews from abroad.
"Emigration," the report con-
cludes, "is the only hope for the
2,500 or 3.000 Jews in Iraq. After
two years of brutality, terrorism,
harrassment and social ostracism,
the Jews want to leave their native
land en masse — even though it
means leaving. all of their posses-
sions behind." (Related story

homes and offices of Jews—includ-
ing Jewish doctors — have been

cut."
The report continues:
"The world outcry for permis-
sion for Jews to emigrate osten-

however you drive, you can do it better on the same kind of DUNLOP
quality that has led the way in so many important automotive competi-

You can expect this from the world-wide company that invented the Pneu-
