JULIUS ROTENBERG Editor, The Jewish News: I am enclosing a copy of an ar- , ticle from your Aug. 1 issue. Need- less to say, I was totally taken aback by your reply to the young 0 lady. I believe that as speakers of the Jewish community, you could hav delved into the issue — more than replying that you too, were puzzled. BURNSTEIN and MARK, ALAN & LINDA and prosperity to all (Linda Forst wrote of her puz- zlement that parents who have lit- tle concern for Jewishness in their own households insist that their children "marry Jewish." The Jew- ish News acknowledged that it has no answer to this woeful condition of Jewish life.) It would seem to me that if this young lady feels no ties with her Judaism, then you could certainly agree with the idea that there would be no reason for her to marry Jewish. However, I believe that if she had enough interest to write her letter, which is indeed about a serious topic, you could have gone into further detail ex- plaining to her the importance of her Jewish background in terms of easing the path to a happy mar- riage. For whatever reason you believe the Jewish background is important (and I assume you do!), you owed it to Linda to answer some of her questions. Since I have also asked myself the same question many times. I was disappointed to see your eva- sive answer. I think I know my- self well enough to desire a Jew- ish marriage, but I would still have liked to see a further interest on your part. SHIRLEY TANNER Martha Cook Building Ann Arbor, Michigan • • (Editor's Note: The Jewish News is indeed interested. So much so, in fact, that we are in the midst of preparing an article on this very perplexing issue. Linda's question, we felt, was a rhetorical one; directed at the hypocrisy she sees around her.)
